Literacy Planning For Reception
by Guest- 5 replies

Hi, I've been browsing here for a while but feel the need to post today as I'm reaching panic stations; I'm a 2nd year BA student on a Primary Ed course and I have a week left of my assessed placement in a reception class. I need my whole week to go out with a bang as I'm so desperate to get all 1s in my final grading. The reason for my panic is I need to teach a literacy session tomorrow that I can assess the children's learning from and build upon in in Tuesday's lesson. The current topic is Space and I have within arm's reach 'Aliens love underpants' and 'how to catch a star' to use. The class teacher has given me free range on what to cover objective wise but I w…

Medium Term Planning
by Guest- 22 replies

Hi I'm starting to panic a bit now that September is fast-approaching! I think I've got my head around the long-term planning using bits and pieces from all the wonderful Continuous Provision sheets I've found on here. I'm just a bit confused about the medium-term planning. I know it's difficult to plan ahead when we don't know what the children are interested in and therefore don't know what topics we will be doing. I'm just concerned about coverage of the six areas and all of the ELGs. I have an idea that the medium term plan will start off quite empty and fill up as the weeks go by. I know it's supposed to be a working document but would that be enough to sati…

Does anyone habe any great ideas for starting points for practical problem solving? What things have really worked well for you? Particularly very brief things that would work well in whole class session. (But any lengthier investigation starters would be warmly welcomed as well!!)

Letters And Sounds
by Guest- 9 replies

We've finished teaching Phase 3 Letters and Sounds and are concentrating on the children using the sounds in their own writing. I'm aware that we have taught them correct letter formation for lower case letters, but nothing on capitals. We're now stressing that in sentences we always start with a capital letter .... but the children don't necessarily recognise these and certainly don't know how to form them. What does everyone else do? I follow the Revise, Teach, Practise and apply format for L&S lessons. Would you focus on a few capitals at a time to teach them, then get them using these in practise. It just seems very sterile compared to what I think are …

Stone Age, Bone Age!
by Guest- 0 replies

Hi All!! Our preschool children have developed an interest in the stone age and a world without shops/cars/mobile phones etc etc. They are completely mesmerised by the story 'Stone Age, Bone Age' and insist on having it read to them daily. With this in mind, we are trying to think up some activities for them to develop this interest further. Has anybody got any suggestions?? Jellytots

Who has any great child initiated ideas for calculation. So that we can observe children covering the Calculation profile points without too much adult direction.

1:1 Correspondance
by Guest- 12 replies

I wonder if anyboday can help me or have encountered similar problems with children in their class. I have a boy in my class (5 years 4 months), who seems to be unable to count using 1:1 correspondance. I am worried he is going to go up to year 1 not having achieved any of the nursery goals for NLC or calculating. I have tried everything I can think of to try and get him to point to each object in turn as he counts and have modelled everyday in 1:1 sessions with him. His mum has tried at home as well and is equally worried. He cannot count 3 objects reliably. I have tried getting him to count things that make a sound when he touches them, counting the windows in stick…
