Lesson Observation

Hi, I haven't written on here before so hope this works ok!!!! I'm being observed on Friday doing a literacy group time lesson (on carpet) with my Reception class of 30. I have a TA and can split for parts if we need to. We are doing a topic on penguins and this week looking at the book 'The Emperors Egg'. From being observed before, my feedback is often that not all children are participating and my lessons don't have enough pace. I do find it hard engaging all 30 children for a carpet (group time activity). I can pick objectives of my choice, for example, discuss the features of a story book. But obvioulsy for this observation it needs to be an exciting objecti…

Ofsted Are Coming!

Any Ofsted advice would be gratefully accepted! We got the call today - they are coming Tues & Weds next week. Gulp! Never been through an Ofsted before. Have just finished my NQT year. We had a new Head on Monday ... 4 days into the job and she gets a call from Ofsted .... I have mixed Reception & Year One, but I think there will be a focus on early years, with the new EYFS and I am now totally panicking, as I am probably guilty of more focus on Y1s, which could be why I am still up at this time of night - staring at blank lesson plans ... my brain has fried/melted/frazzled or a combination of all! My PPA time was this afternoon - but I ended up…

As follow up for the week we will be: Looking at keeping safe Making large and small scale police cars Using walkie talkies Playing with the police play mobile car Making police badges Investigating handcuffs, batons, stab vests and photo's of old uniforms. I do not feel very inspired by our list of ideas above. Does anyone have any other good ideas? Lola

Child Initiated Learning
by Guest- 17 replies

I recently put a post on here about short term/ long term planning but didn't have my questions completely answered so am trying again! When planning activities in a reception classroom- do you let children have free choice of where do go or do you set up activities where the children could lead their own learning? I work alongside two other teachers who group the 30 children into 6 groups. 2 groups would have a focussed acivity with an adult and the other 4 groups have 4 activities- e.g. construction, maths area, role play and small world. The children would move on when ready and the 6 groups would each have a chance to spend time on each activity throughout the week a…

Hiya! i hope the week is going well for you all. I'm sure this topic has probably been discussed on here before...but i haven't found it yet! We have just started doing learning journies for my reception class. I just wondered if you would share your ideas of what you put in your journies. We have spilt ours into each of the areas of the the profile and are planning to put in observations, photos etc Any other thoughts would be great, thanks Lib

Hello I am in the process of writing an EYFS policy. Would anyone mind if I had a look at theirs? I have looked at an example on the TES site which is good but i always like to have a couple of examples because people have different and good ideas to draw on. does anyone have a separate section for outdoors? I would really appreciate it, if anyone would be kind enough. Thank you

Literacy In A Mixed Reception Year 1
by Guest sarahjw- 4 replies

Hello everyone I am in a mixed reception year 1 class and am struggling with managing literacy. I have used the Hamilton plans, but don't feel they are quite hitting the mark. There's a lot I feel I should be doing with reception in particular, that isn't covered, and feel they do a lot of unneceary stuff. I have also looked at the Scholastic new framewok 100 literacy hours, but don't like this at all. Ideally I'd like to plan what I think reception should be doing and differentiate up for Year 1, but this means I won't be covering the Framework objetives. Any clever people out there got it worked out? Thanks Sarah

Elg Format Sheet
by Guest- 15 replies

Hi I'm so glad that I can finally access this site Just wondering if anyone has a sheet or a format where ELG or objectives that they feel are covered continuously in their classroom. I find that i am continuously pointing out or typing out the same ones each week such as ' hear & say initial final sounds' etc. Does anyone have a method that they use to stop this. Obviously if they are the main point of the activity then that is fair enough but I find that there are some that you cover all the time. Do I really need to keep pointing them out. Thanks

Language Problems

I have a Polish boy in my class who despite input from all is making little progress in developing his english. SENCO has asked me to write an Individual Language Programme for him along same lines as IEP's and IBP's just wondered if anyone else had a format already in use that they would share with me! Thanks.
