Do people in reception do the long / focused types of observations on their children in the Spring term - if so how do you fit it in!! Am just trying to sort out our timetable for when we go back (better late than never eh!!!) and now we are putting more into it am finding that opportunities to undertake focused obs are very very limited - so how do you good folk feel about this???? Incidentals will continue as always. Your thoughts please . . . .

Assessments!

Hi I am new to the FSF but already i have picked up some valuable info to help me with my teaching. I am in my third year of teaching and i now feel that i am able to make a few changes of my own with regards to planning and assessments after 2 years of advisors and OFSTED breathing down our necks! I am focussing on my methods of assessments at the moment. I introduced a new and i hope, easier way of making assessments on each child but i would like some ideas of how other people assess in the foundation stage (reception). Do you observe particular children every week? Do you have key objectives that you focus on assessing the children against each week? how…

Room Layout

My school has decided to invest money in re-structuring my classroom. At the minute we have two rooms, and we are also been given a room next door which I am thinking will be toilets/cloackroom. They will be knocking walls down, so that we will be able to see children all the time and also changing a window into a door so we can have free flow outdoors. The plan is to make a covered area outdoors, and I was wondering what sort of flooring others have outside. I know this is a bit of an open question, but does anyone have any areas that work really well, don't work, wish you had/don't want. I can have pretty much what I want. if it's possible. Other members of st…

Short Term/weekly Plans
by Guest- 7 replies

Hello there, I am new to the forum and was wondering if anyone could give me some advice on planning. I am teaching reception for the first time after christmas and am trying to find a weekly planning format that I feel comfortable with. I have looked at the schools weekly plans and they seem relatively easy to follow, however, I am not sure how much detail they need to have on them. During planned activities, should plans state which children/groups went where, and how detailed should descriptions of each activity be? If anyone has any examples of plans to share, that would be fab!

The school I work at (3 form intake) has a big emphasis on the idea that all the 3 classes from the yr group do the same thing. My take on the EYFS is that in early years this doesn't work as well because we should following our interests. so i just wondered if any other reception teachers in big schools, plan with the other class teachers, and if the EYFS has had any impact on this, thanks in advance.

Floor Covering

After one of the children walked all round class yesterday with a piece of home made playdough stuck to his foot, the caretaker and head at my school are not happy. The room was re-carpeted over the summer, then I moved in and caused havoc with sand, dough and glitter. I've tried keeping the dough in the creative area, which has a hard floor, but accidents will happen! I would love to have a more practical surface indoors, but the head thinks it would make the room too noisy. (With Y1/2 in there too, noise levels are always an issue). Maybe a few old washable rugs taped down over the carpet might be the answer - but I still don't think I'd get playdough out of them,…

Hi A while ago I downloaded a learning journey power point presentation on a learning journey from Southampton. I really like the way it is set out and want to adapt it for my own setting. Cheekily I thought I may be able to alter the original but it would seem it is protected. Is there another document from 'Southampton that i can adapt? I cant remember who posted it now so this is a long shot. Over the past few months I have been trying all sorts of different ways to present our learning journey system, but i still really like this one. Any help greatly appreciated. I have attached it to see if this jogs anyones memory. thanks Lisax Ps Merry Christm…
