Hi Everyone I am quite a new Reception Teacher and was not early years trained!!! I work in a single form entry primary school. Nursery and Reception are in a portacabin but due to building constraints we are unable to turn it into a foundation unit! I have tried a few different ways to structure my day and have not yet found one that I am 100 percent comfortable with! I am currently have free play form 8.45-9.05. We then have phonics input and a literacy input. From that, a group per day have a lit focus-adult led. We then go out for morning break, come in, have num input and each day a different group has their num focus session. This then leads to dinner time. Whil…

Hi there everyone, We have just had Ofsted this week, and similar to an earlier post, I was subjected to an unexpected interview with the Inspector. He was really probing about the levels at which the children came into school. I realise how vitally important it is that I get these right, as the results track children throughout school and obviously results are predicted from these initial assessments. Although I was aware of this, the rigorous questioning by the Inspector has made me seriously doubt my assessments. Does anyone out there have a tried and tested way of assessing on entry. Every year I try to find a way which is manageable and which provides an accu…

Hi all, just wondering what everyone else does. I have a small class of nursery/reception and some of the children are very bright and keen to record so we do some writing over and writing under models and they seem to enjoy this. they are good at number recognition, one more, one less, how many, putting together ect and i now feel they should be doing more recording in numeracy. I love role play and all the creative activities and would hate to be to scructured and i really promote learning through play but for these individuals should i be pushing them forward. worksheets do they have a value? i am not sure. Also parents are pushy and want them to be enrolling for…

We have just had out ofsted and it has been a horrible experience - I am the literacy coordinator and early years too but am never given any time to do any eartly years stuff - I am the reception teacher. I was not prepared for the fact that foundation stage is reported on seperately and had been told to prepare for an interview with an inspector about Litercay instead I was grilled about early years and left feeling totally unprepared and as if everything I had done was wrong and inadequate - my lesson obs went ok but our use of outdoors was heavily criticised which I was expecting as we are in the process of developing it but I feel like I am banging my head on a bri…
