Assessments

If anyone could let me know how they carry out their observations and assessments I would be very grateful. I am currently taking over from a nursery teacher and the assessments need to be re-structured. I plan to create a portfolio for each child and this will hold children's work, observations, photos and group assessments. The main thing I am stuck on is how to create a method where I dont use the Early Years Profile booklets. The reason I cant use them is because the reception class where I work do not work from these profiles. Would this be a problem? If so, what alternative method could i use???

Extending Children

Hello everyone! I hope you're all having a good term! I am a Reception teacher and I was observed by my head teacher and somebody from my LEA today as I've just finished being an NQT! I did number bonds to 6 and I got the children to record the different ways of making 6 using number sentences. In my feedback they both said it wasn't appropriate for the children to be recording number sentences in the first term of reception and that really it was a year 1 objective. Superheroes

Hi there, we have changed our topics and next term we are beginning a new topic called Superheroes. I very much leave my planning flexible and see how it evolves with the children, but just wondered if anyone has any ideas? I was thinking of beginning it with looking at superheroes we know in our family, at work ( e.g. firefighters etc) and then look at other well known superheroes. Some ideas would be welcomed to get the old brain working!! thanks

I teach in a Nursery class in a large primary school. Our SIPS officer has stated that we must have a formal Nursery baseline in order to show value-added by the end of Reception and KS1. We have always used the stepping stones as an informal baseline, but she is asking us to give children scores so that we have specific statistics and graphs can be made. Currently we try to assess the children within their first 4 weeks of starting Nursery. Looking at our records of children who started this term, there are lots of stepping stones that have not been marked off, not necessarily because the children have not achieved them, but becuase it has not been observed wit…
