Hi there Please, please can someone help me to get my head around letters and sounds. I understand the pace and to be honest taught from jolly phonics last year doing a sound a day. We did 10 mins whole class every day differentiated as the children progres. What I am having probs with is I had a visit from my early years advisor before the summer hols saying that each group should have a daily ten minutes teaching and that on my planning I should be showing how I am using the teach, practise and apply model!!! I currently teach in a mixed YR/Y1 class, I have organised the ch by ability into their phonics groups. Does each group need an activity every day? Is th…

Hi! I'm an NQT in a mixed R and Year 1 classroom. I'm really enjoying it so far but i'm finding that i'm planning everything twice! I just wondered if anyone had any ways that they plan their independent learning areas? I have a writing area, creative table, maths table, malleable area, role play and small world inside. Sand, water, KUW table and construction outside. I'm aware that at the moment my focus has been on my Yr 1 planning and i really want to devise a logical weekly way of plannning my table tops/areas. Does anyone have any ways that they do it or ideas? Any advice would be appreciated. Thanks

Child Led Play

Hi. Can anyone help me decide when we should intervene in an activity? We have a wee boy who selected the diggers for the sand. Good idea, put this in my plan! We then added pipes and tubes during the week as he was busy making underground tunnels. Again onto the plan! But now the child has had the diggers in the sand for 2 weeks and no-one else but him seems to want to play there. So do we change it? Or do we wait for someone else to say "I want ... in the sand." we have a similar situation in the home corner although one child mentionned that she was taking the doll to hospital so we could expand on this and change the theme. Being child led is great but surely 1 chi…

I am hoping someone can help me! I am a ks2 trained teacher who has been teaching year 1 for the past few years. This year I have a new head who wants me to continue the foundation stage with my year 1's as they haven't all achieved the ELGs. I have had no experience of planning in this way and would really appreciate some advice! My topic is Toys and I have found a fab topic web but am struggling with creating weekly plans form this. I know this is a silly questions but are learning intentions the same as the stepping stones and ELGs? And could someone explain if I am supposed to link all my water/sand and play etc to my topic too? Help!!

Hi there as part of my topic titled, ' whats inside,' I would like to spend some time next week doing lots of circle times etc; talking about how things make us feel etc etc. Had a lovely idea about getting children to listen to short pieces of different music / sounds and talk about how that makes us feel, e.g. scary, calm, angry etc. Does anyone know of a good cd to buy with short pieces of music or have tried something similar?? Or any other ideas that would work with this topic??? cheers guys

Organising Observations

Hi everyone! This is my first ever post to Forum so please excuse me if I seem a bit longwinded, but I am now becoming desperate. I am trying to organise how and when I carry out observations in my Reception Class. Have tried various systems but none seem to work. For this year I am thinking about the idea of each adult (2) to have a targeted group of children for one week. During that week I thought perhaps 1 whole group observation (focussed) and then individual observations also on a focussed area (i.e. PSED). Also for spontaneous observations to take place with our targeted group throughout the week. Do you think this will work? I would really, really welco…

Core Provision Planning

[b]I am interested to know if / how anyone in YR and Y1 is using core provision planning (where you have long term plans for areas of provision). I am especially interested in how you manage the short term planning, based on following children's interests. Does anyone have any sample weekly plans / timetables? ALso, is anyone using a learning story type approach to capitalising on children's interests as individuals and in small groups?
