Addition - How Do You Do It?
by Guest- 7 replies

I'm looking to improve our scores in calculation this year. I've always tried to use mathematical language (e.g. 3 AND 1 more MAKES 4) but having looked at the 'Mathematical Activities for the Foundation Stage' stuff they seem to introduce the + and = symbols quite early. The problem I have is that they just say 'Write 3 + 1 = 4' on the board without actually seeming to explain what the symbols are. Isn't that confusing? How do you do it? I'm really tieing myself up in knots with this one! Any fool (or Moose) proof techniques you have for teaching addition, and subtraction for that matter, would be gratefully received.

Hi, Does anyone have a system to monitor coverage and progression of skills which children cover in the FS? Do you have designated ELGs planned for each term or do you cover the majority each term? How do you plan for CLL and MD in Reception at medium term level? Does anyone have a list of skills which you cover in CD and KUW each term/ year e.g materials, light, etc in KUW and colour mixing, weving, etc in CD and how do you plan for these in light of child initiation? I'm sorry for series of questions and hope someone can help! Thanks Cx

Maths Obbo - Calculating
by Guest- 6 replies

Hi everyone. I'm being observed by the Maths co-ord soon. The focus is 'Calculating' looking at the use of jottings and incorperating layered targets. It's aimed at KS1 and although I teach YR still have the same focus (although they're not so worried about the jottings etc). Anyway, just wondered if anyone had a ny ideas. I was thinking of doing something active, like skittles maybe, and then the jottings could just be very informal on whiteboards (focusing on simple addition) and then comparing more and less to see who has won. What do you think? Any replies very much appreciated x
