Culturally Inclusive Curriculum

Our school had an Inset day on this topic. We are all choosing a topic/theme to plan a six week block to deliver in late spring /summer. The rest of then school looked a the curriculum map and chse a theme but in fs we were a little overwhelmed because we didn't want to focus on a topic but wanted to pick something that was realistic and manageable. One of the EMA team is going to come in and plan with us in the new year and initially our idea was to focus on story BUT if anyone has been involved in this type of planning and have any plans that I could look at I would really appreciate your input

Phonics

Hi, Does anyone know how often Nursery and Reception aged children are expected to do dedicated phonics each week? Up until last year Reception did phonics once a day and Nursery did phonics once or twice a week, then we changed to YR twice a day and YN once a day. However, now an advisory teacher has been into school and said that she does not think that phonics needs to be done this frequently, especially in Nursery, as she does not think it has been written down anywhere. I cannot find my course notes to confirm who told me this and where they got their information on this area. It would certainly make organisation easier if we do not need to do this b…

How Often Do You Change...

I'm thinking at this in terms of writing. In previous years, we have always had a different focus each week, be it a big book, a film, an animated short, etc etc... and then each child sometime in that week has done some kind of 'focused' writing task to do with the stimulus. For example, when we did Sponge Bob Square Pants week - all the children (on very different levels) had to have a go at filling in some blank speech bubbles on a Sponge BOb cartoon strip. But, we have more children tis year, and it's proving more difficult to get every child through, whilst still giving them the individual support, coaching them how to link letters to all those sounds they can he…

Early Years Unit!

I work in an early years unit, we have 20 ft reception children and 25 nursery each setting eg am/pm. three staff 1 teacher 2 n.nurses one of our teachers was observed during a literacy lesson by the headteacher (junior trained and never worked in infants or early years) who has given his feedback now and says its far too noisy in the unit and can we put a big screen up to block out the noise. I think you might as well have a reception class if we have to start doing this. It would also restrict the younger children from certain areas as they wouldnt be able to access all the unit. I just wondered what other units do and what are your thoughts on this idea.

Hi all, I am in Reception and have started to doing Jolly Phonics to teach sounds. I am not quite up to 6 a week but we are moving pretty quickly and they have learned the sounds really well. What I am now having a problem with is trying to get them to blend the sounds together to start to either read a simple CVC word or to hear a word that is being sounded out. I have never seen it modelled so am making up blending as I go along. Does anyone have any good ideas on ways to do this? Thanks!
