Hi all, I have a new intake of children in reception and one child who is Lithuanian started with no English language. He he did not attend a nursery and only speaks Lithuanian at home. He seems to be settling in well and understands the basic conventions of the class, in fact he is the best in terms of tidying up and helping. I would like some advice on how we can assisst him to increase his vocabulary and become confident speaking. It is only my second year in teaching and haven't had the experience of a child with no English at all. Thanks in advance.

hi all, just wondered how many focused activities reception staff have set up through the day?? I have 3 adults in the morning and there is myself and a TA in the afternoon. When there is 3 of us, one adult is outside whilst the others have a focused group in either room but this leaves the remanding children alone to run riot therefore no quality learning gets done with the focused group as I'm having to intervene and sort out the others!! Would it be better to have one of the adults as a floater, and cut down the number of focused activities?? Any advice as to how you manage your day much apreciated, can't be doing with this next week!! As I said on my introductory p…

Hi ya, please can anyone share ideas they use to assess childrens reading in Year 1. I have been told to do reading conferences with my class each term and level their reading to go on a tracking grid. Does anyone have any ideas or know of something I could read to get me started? Thanks

Peggy Am I right in thinking the winning letter of the week in this weeks Nursery World is from you? If so CONGRATULATIONS - I love the idea and will use it in my nursery as a welcome display. If not - Oops......sorry! It's worth looking at the letters page anyway and copying the idea. Monica

I am working with severe special needs and feel that it is not appropriate with most of my class but there are a few that I think could learn them. do other people just show 1 a day and keep going on it telling the children what it says?? thanks for your help Jo

Hi I'm an NQT teaching a nursery class thats part of a primary school. I've seen lots of different ways of planning as part of my trainning, but am now having difficulty deciding the best way to plan not only to suit myself, but also my nursery nurse and other support staff. I want to make sure it's enough for me as an NQT, but not silly ammounts that aren't necessary. I was wondering whether you could let me know how much planning you do each week, how many sheets and in what form. For example I have done teaching practice in settings that have one big plan on two large a3 sheets and then a different setting with a plan for whole class, a plan for circle time, a plan…

Hi, Never actually posted a topic on here yet, but have been enjoying the benefit of lots of your ideas and advice. Which I am trully grateful for!!! Have you any ideas on the best way to set targets? This is probably going to sound very long winded but I feel as though I need to make you aware of the settings arrangements, etc. Before I ask for your advice/ideas. I'm a Nursery teacher in a Foundation Unit we take 30 nursery children for morning or afternoon sessions and we have two Reception classes of 28 children. 1 of the Reception classes has 7Y1 SEN children as well as a number of children who require some sort of support - be it speech and language, or be…

Hi, Before I fire away some questions (which to most people are probably really obvious!!!) please treat me as clueless nursery assistant with only the Foundation Stage as her bible. I have been looking in the forum but maybe my tired eyes have missed something and I've also done a search on google with little success. Anyway I WILL get to the point!! I help out in two year 2 classes twice a week...does anyone know if they follow a particular document to observe and monitor from and if so could anyone possible post it on here or send me a copy so I can take a look at it..I would have asked my teacher on Monday but with it only being the second week back and a whole ne…

and most of my new intake are coming in at yellow or blue level stepping stones. Do people only write the ELG on their plans or do people do codes eg CLL b 3 and write the statement for different levels? I'm not sure which to do as at present we just do ELG but these aren't always appropriate for the intake at this time of year. Any help appreciated.
