Hi all, I am just looking for some advice on making assessment and observation more effective in my Reception Class. I am starting my final term as an NQT (started in the school in January) and would really like to improve on my assessment methods as I kind of muddled through last year. Currently (as advised by the LEA) I make one tracking observation per child per term. I have activity observation sheets for each focused activity they do (tick box to say if they have reached the objective of the activity plus space for notes if needed). I also use post-it notes for general observation in CI play but with this I am not always been consistent. It sometimes feels like…

Another query for anyone on line. I am trying to organise my daily/weekly timetable for Reception and I am just wondering how much time you would recommend that we spend outside in planned and child initiated play? I am not able to have free access to the outdoor space as there are no barriers so have to timetable it in. I also wondered what type of opportunities for play you would have every day. None of my equipment can be left outside so I am trying to work out how to store things effectively so that I can get access easily. Thanks again for your advice! Claire

Cutting Down Paperwork
by Guest- 12 replies

Our head is concerned that we are all doing too much paper work and wants to cut it down. I am all for this however i am woryyin gwe are going to far the other way. For our medium term plans he wants us to simply put the general theme of the session i.e PSE - friendship or Creative - model making. I am worried that this is far too broad. Their are no objectives involved here i am not sure what Ofsted would think. Your opinions would be greatly appreciated - am i relying too much on detail on planning or do you think what he suggests is too basic?

Baseline Activities

Hi there, I wonder if anybody can help me, we are changing the way we complete our baseline assessments at the beginning of the reception year, does anybody know of a bank of activities that we could set up with matching stepping stones/goals? For example a threading beads activity could cover pattern making, fine motor control recognition of shape etc. We plan to allow children free play and activities that have been set up whereby we can then observe the children at play in order to complete baseline assessment. Thank you

Timetable For Mixed R/1
by Guest- 3 replies

Hi I was just wondering how others organise their timetables for mixed R/1 class. I will have about 29 in my class and the majority of the Reception children will go home at luch time until January. I have read some other threads on timetables but haven't seen one for a mixed age class. How do you fit it all in and still find time to play with and observe the children?

Interactive Displays

Hi, Looking for some inspirational ideas. I have a large board just outside the classroom that goes from floor to quite high. I'd quite like to make an attractive display that welcomes children and looks good for parents/visitors/staff as well. Seeing as the board goes from the floor it would be nice to be interactive but I dont want it to be too distracting as we have to walk past to get into classroom and if we are going to be walking to hall etc So does anyone have any ideas of what I could put on the board? thanks Jo
