Generic Skills Plan
by Guest- 3 replies

Hi Sue Have been reading your blog with interest, I teach in a reception class but they are a younger group and I would really like to try out planning without 'topics' as I feel that you can get too hung up on getting the activities done, fitting them in etc. I notice you said your EY team composed a generic skills plan to which you added the contexts, if at all possible and wishing to save myself a lot of time could you possibly give me more of an idea as to what these look like, an attached sample would be great and then I might get an idea of whether i could adapt it to suit our own needs. I know its cheeky hope you don't mind me asking. Ruth

Hi everyone, Have searched the old postings and put in a search ... but cannot find any? The plans I am considering placing on display in learning areas, for example, writing area, sand, water etc. When I was working as a TA (a few years ago) we use to have them - they were really helpful for anyone visiting the class to know the learning intentions going on etc. They were formated to A4 and for adults info. They had the main overall learning intentions, list of enhanced provision introduced to the area & key questions. They were to cover the breadth of the term (YR) Does anyone work in a simular fashion? Is this now outdated? Reason I'm quite keen is t…

A Little Reassurance

After spending the last 4 weeks getting married (my rec class made a guard of honour for me) and enjoying a fantastic 3 wk honeymoon reality has hit home! This year i have a mixed reception/Year 1 class. I will be having the less able Year 1s who are still working towards the ELGs. Now in my previous life as a mixed rec/y1/y2 teacher i just contiuned the childrens learning from where we left it back in july and continued to provide the appropriate learning environment to meet there needs. Is this ok still? Also, how do i get round the fact that the y1/y2 teacher in all the meetings with parents kept saying 'all the year 1 children will be doing the same things'…

Daily/weekly Timetables
by Guest- 3 replies

hi, starting as NQT in sept in the special needs school that i trained in. have got a mixed reception year 1 class and have been left to do the timetable. I am a little bit worried about this as how do I know if its ok? how long does everyone else spend on C.I and T.D everyday and off the T.D how much of each of the 6 areas? if anyone wouldnt mind sharing their daily or weekly timetable I'd be grateful to see some that are already working. Also my school want me to have a daily phonics slot at the brginning of each day but they obviously still need to cover all of the other CLL ELG's which will then mean my class are spending more time on CLL than the other areas an…

When putting objectives on Medium term plans and broad objectives on short term plans do you put the full objective or just the part that relates to the objective? i.e for KUOW if you are looking at change would you put the whole objective of 88a Look closely at similarities, differences, patterns and change OR would you just put 88a look closely at change?

A Few Questions.......!
by Guest- 10 replies

I am new to the Foundation stage and was wondering if anybody could help by answering a few questions? How soon do you give out reading books? We follow Jolly Phonics and I am sure I read last year (whilst I was in Y1/2) that they should not have a book until they know all of the phonemes. The reception teacher (for past 4 years) has always given books out on the children's first day as it makes them feel like they are at school! We are planning for children to self register then have a choice of activities to settle in with when they first arrive. This is probably a silly question so I apologise but do you encourage the children to stay at one activity or allow th…
