Hi all, We've just been looking at our interim assessment data for Reception in terms of reading. What we are finding is that there are a number of children who are at the typical stage of development through Nursery but then show to be below average at this time of year in Reception (in reading, and some writing but not so much). Does anyone else find that because the reading statements completely change in focus between 30-50 and 40-60 months that some children can be 'average' through Nursery but then look like they've made no progress during the first half of reception? E.g. they are emerging 40-60 at the beginning of Reception but haven't made enough progress for th…

Hi everyone, I had a visit from my EYIO which lead to a big discussion on next steps. She said that some people to quite broad next steps that may last up to 6 weeks and others may change them each week accordingly. I was (previously) told to make my next steps really keyed in to concentrate on one small area for instance, Tommy likes jigsaws and his next step is to link two to three words togethor so I would plan to have the jigsaw out and have his key worker playing alongside him to model language, etc. What are others doing? I would really appreciate it if anyone can send me an example and how you record it all. Every time an EYIO comes along I go home with my head sp…

Hi All I have just found out that at my school we should have the option to record our EYFS assessment data on SIMs - is anyone else using this? And is it purely for the end of year scores or should I be able to use it throughout the year for tracking? Any advice welcomed! xx

I am just starting up two new role play areas, one inside, one out. The inside one is a cookie/sweet shop and the outside one a Macdonalds drive through. Both of these came about through the children's interests. Our role play has been somewhat uninspired and uninspiring for several weeks now but both of these started with something the children were doing anyway and have generated interest and excitement and some really good discussions about what needs to be in there. My head is out on a course this morning and stopping at Macdonalds on the way back so has been commissioned to bring me back some useful empty boxes/bags/cups etc. As he was going he said "So, how …

We don't use Jolly Phonics, so some of their actions (attached) wouldn't make sense to our children, e.g. 'i' for mouse (Inky Mouse). Has anyone come up with any other actions? By the way, do you consider actions very helpful in the learning of letter sounds? Jolly Phonics Actions.pdf Jolly Phonics Actions.docx

Hello...your thoughts please. We want to update outside area. If you had a wish list (space no object) what would you do out there. At present we have a bare Tarmac playground, trees, climbing area and lots of grass. All ideas welcome please.
