Hi, This my first post of the year - so - HAPPY NEW YEAR! Just hoping someone out there might be able to give me some advice! I am getting muddled with focused and independent groups and keeping track of the children. Our fantastic early years advisor came in last week and put our minds at rest with a lot of things. However, she suggested that we changed our literacy and numeracy sessions so that there is only 1 focused activity going on, while the other practitioner floats to support the children's learning in the areas and the independent activities. Previously, we were both doing a focused task and there was 2 independent tasks going on, while one group was comple…

I wonder if anyone can clarify this. A friend of mine recently had her foundation stage profile assessments moderated. From this she was told she should be using the FSP statements as objectives for her lessons. Also, she was told she should be planning for all areas of learning through out the day. Any thoughts?

we have just got a new foundation stage manager who does not have a clue about the foundation stage and wants to change the way we do our assessements (wants to change it to fit with ks1 assessemnts!) i thought they were fine, what do you think, is this suffient and how are you doing yours. we currently: 1. make ongoing assessements through sticky labels which are them stuck on to area sheets for each child. 2. we then use group assessments if working with a focused group. 3. we also do long observations. 4. we then have at the bottom of the sticky label sheets we have the profile pionts for each area. if the child has achieved them and evidence is there…

A long and complicated one! Here goes! I am a big fan of the argument/rationale for teaching synthetic phonics. We do lots of work on this in whole class sessions: learning letter sounds, which sound can you hear at the start of these words, let's read this word by saying the sounds we can see...etc. However, as a token gesture, the children are given the Reception NLS high frequency words to learn at home. I personally have a problem with these words as they are not phonetic and 'go against' what we do in class but that's just a personal thing. Historically, my school used to be very big on high frequency words and children were drilled in these using the 'look …

I am leading a free standing geography based outdoor session in the school field with a reception class of 25, who are a difficult class. Any ideas for a lesson which can stand alone without additional input through class time. The session is 1 hour and wil take place whatever the weather! Thanks!
