Numeracy / Literacy In The Mornings?

Hi everyone, i've just been reading the excellent posts about planning grids, continuous provision etc as i'm new to all this, (never find the time!!! ) but what a fabulous place to know about!!! I'm about to overhaul reception too and would love to hear from other practitioners to see if you still have num and lit in the morning. What i currently do is myself and the TA work with a small group each and the other children do independent activities relating to the lit / num focus be it in the sand, construction, comp, painting etc. I have recently watched the transition to yr 1 dvd from fs and the chidren in both classes come in and have free play in the morning for …

Hi there I would like to say hi to everyone and how much I am enjoying being a member of this fantastic forum. I will be working in a reception/foundation class in september, I had traditionally in the past done a seperate lit and num plan, but i have read that some people are doing combined planning sheets and planning sheets that cover all areas of learning. could anyone shed anymore light on this as last year in my reception class i felt ( as we do) that i was planning for plannings sake and in the end I was over planning. I would love this year to be some what less stressful and paper oriented and would love to use a simple format that combines all areas. Do y…

On Entry Assessment
by Guest- 12 replies

Hi there, I am busy planning the beginning of a new reception term for Sept and need some help with on entry assessments. I'm supporting an NQT and would like some input on on entry asessments. Does anyone have some kind of framework or format for assessments during induction (we only have 1 week half days). I would really like something that links to the Profile but with steps prior to point 1. I know this is cheeky, last year I just used the profile and entered the results but my NQT has no understanding of the profile and I feel I need to provide a more clear and precise assessment format for her. Many Thanks Emma

Pse - Interview

I have another interview and have been asked to do a PSE activity on anything I want with reception children. I want to use a story with a moral or strong theme and get all the children really involved. Any fantastic ideas you have used or have seen? Have 15-20 mins in which to do it.

Do You Add Value?
by Guest- 5 replies

Once again, following a leadership team meeting, I have been asked about providing 'baseline'scores for my foundation stage children. I have said that it is not necessary to do so any longer as the children's assessment is through the profile. I'm told that I need to do something to show the value added by the Reception class and that would validate the good work we do. What are you all doing? I imagine others are facing similar pressures to provide measurable data. My worry is that it is very easy to sit down after a number of weeks and produce some evidence of what you've observed so far relating to free activities and teacher led tasks. But does this produce …

Handheld Pocket Pc And Assessment
by Guest- 8 replies

I was on a course this week and saw a demonstration of a handheld pocket PC to link in with our Foundation Stage Target Tracker. You keep it clipped to your belt and use it as you go. You click on an assessment point and then either write in a comment about a child, take a photo or record a comment. It automatically links it to the Target Tracker assessment sheet. Then you can download it all onto the laptop and voila - it's all done - evidence linked directly in with the assessments. It cuts out the constant transfer of data and information from post it notes, proformas and digital cameras! Now is that clever or what??? I wondered whether anyone out there is using this a…

Floating And Sinking

Has anyone taught a lesson to reception chn on floating and sinking? If so, did you get the chn to record? I was thinking of pictures they could stick either on or under a picture of a water tank to show which objects float or sink. Does this sound ok? Not sure how to differentiate it though so any ideas would be greatly appreciated.
