Hi there. In my school in Reception the children do two or three pieces of writing a week and at least 4 pages of homework. But is this too much? Some people say yes it is too much at that level others say no and it may not even be enough to prepare them for Year One. I know about the Foundation Stages but some people say I should also follow the National Curriculum and I am CONFUSED! help?!!

by Guest- 13 replies

Does anyone know the offical line on formal testing? I have been asked by my head to complete the formal NFER test on my reception children. This i am not happy about because i have never used formal tests to assess reception children and don't want to start now. I had enough of seeing Y2 children stressed out during SATS to last me a life time last year.

Aggressive Behaviour

Hi, I am new to the forum and wondered if anyone could help me as I am at my wit's end!! I have four or five aggressive boys in my Reception class. They argue, bite, kick, spit etc and not just on the playground. I have tried circle times, positive reinforcement, 'catch 'em when they are good,' star charts both at home and at school for individuals and class etc. One of the boys is a colleague's son, who works in key stage 2, which has been quite difficult at times! They are rude to other members of staff, including the Headteacher and nothing seems to phase them. One of the boys had to be collected from school at lunchtimes because of his poor behaviour. They are repri…

I posted a topic back in Nov called "Accessing Resources" about how people set up their continuos provision. After trying lots of different things I try to get a balance of directed activities and free play activites. But now I am struggling to know how to use my observations of the children's play to move my planning on each week. For example: How do I record it in my planning? If I see just one child move the play in a particular direction is that enough to alter my plans for the following week? How do I get a balance between topic based play and the children's interests? Is there anyone out there who knows what I mean, to be honest I just need someone to p…

Pips Assessment
by Guest- 9 replies

Hi I was wondering if anyone has or is using the PIPs assessment. I have heard about other schools that use it and it sounded quite good. What experiences does any have with it? I also hear that it is interactive and can be done on a computer working one to one with a child. I would appreciate any opinions on this assessment tool as feel that my school needs some consistent way of assessing children on entry so that we can re assess t the end of reception to judge value added. Does anyone know if the PIPs assessments link with the foundation stage profile? Hope someone can help. Many thanks Joanne
