Hello, I work in a Nursery in the pre school room, and I am responsible for a group of children who are going to school in September so their reception is pre school. I was wondering how to plan for them, I have introduced the sound/letter of the week and I use the Read, Write, Inc by Ruth Miskin which is extremely recommended, however as it is completely new for them I don't want to sit them down and teach them, as I think it will be a big jump and a little intense for them. I have worked in a reception class briefly and the method of teaching is more structured so I would like them to get used to it, but not so strict, as they are used to the free flow activitie…

I've been feeling recently like I've lost my way somewhat with my reception children. My year ones are, on the whole, doing really well but I feel like I've lost focus with reception. Also that I don't have a clear sense of direction for EY at school. There is only me to manage but I'm not doing a good job right now and I feel overwhelmed. I want to write an action plan (having a to do list always helps!) but I don't know where to start. Has anyone got any suggestions? Everything feels too much right now and I don't want to lose my rather tenuous hold on a sense of calm!

Hi, My planning for enhancements or changes to continuous provision at the moment includes a note next to anything that links with the corresponding learning objective for the week underneath the adult-led activity and then a table at the bottom of my main planning which includes any additions or changes for individuals or groups which records area of learning, purpose, resources, target children and a new one is filled out each week. Any other additions we add through the week tend to be recorded on the CI planner where we record responses to CI play. However, I was wondering whether to have an on-going sheet (similar to the Outdoor planner on ABC's blog) where we woul…

Guided Reading in Reception
by Guest- 2 replies

Hi all, I am an NQT in Reception and am being observed in guided reading next week. Currently I don't feel like I teach guided reading well enough, and am very worried about this observation!! I will have a small group (5/6 children) and will sit with them to do a teacher-led guided reading session, whilst my TA supports the rest of the class during child-initiated activities. This is what I was planning on doing for my session, if anyone could offer any advice on whether this sounds ok?? Warm up- revise current phonemes using flashcards with that group (including phonemes that they may come across in the book). -Revise/practise/teach tricky words/HFW that th…

Hi All Need some inspiration and help in restructuring my day. We have a new Head and I have lost my TA. I do only have 20 children. However I have always run free flow and now need to think again. This week I tried all inside and then all outside. Outside area was a little too small for this plan and it was just chaos! I also found guided sessions a challenge, if it wasn't constant interruptions I would look up and think that most of the class were not really engaged in anything very productive. I know I can't be the first to have to run a class of f2 without a TA I just need some inspiration on how to structure my day to ensure I get a balance of guided and s…
