Hi. I am a part-time practitioner in a pre-school and working on my Level 3 NVQ (DPP). I have found some great books about observations & assessments and generally don't feel I have a problem with carrying them out. My problem lies in that I need to separately assess emotional development - most text/reference books lump PSE together and I am having difficulty in working out which of my target child's traits are specifically related to Emotional Development. I've identified her ability to concentrate & persevere, her high self-esteem and a self concept. She takes care of her own personal needs and accepts challenges. All great stuff (I hope), but I can't fin…

I am just about to launch into a major piece of work with our Early years cluster group - we have made a bid for some funds (yes there is money out there) to support professional development across our Foundation Stage Cluster. We have chosen to look at developing investigative and enquiry skills with the children - particularly in terms of scientific enquiry, but not ruling out other areas - any good ideas for activities, or examples of practice which I could share with others in the cluster? Many thanks AngelaC

Hello, know I've posted on this before.. At my school there is a mixed rec (20children) and year 1 (9), then a mixed Year 1 (10) and Year 2 (20). To allow for single year group teaching on three mornings the classes are split so there is 20 rec in one class, 19 year 1 in another and 20 year 2 in another. This is the first year this has happened, and planning is quite tricky! We are trying to use the 3 year topic cycle of term long topics. The timetable is split so that the on Mon the children focus on text level lit, then Tues word level (we have a phonografix teacher comes in for this session), Wed - Fri is sentence level and handwriting. For Maths Mon- Tues fo…

I am just about to undergo the huge task of dividing the objetives for the Curriculum Guidance for the Foundation Stage, National Numeracy Strategy and National Literacy Strategy up across the year, and wondered if anyone has already done this or can advise me. I want my medium term plans to show what objectives I will be covering that term and how the documents link. I think it is important that objectives are repeted frequently over the year and show differentiation, however I need to be ensuring I am covering the whole curriculum effectively. Dividing it up will give me even coverage throughout the year and increase the focuss of my lessons. I know of some…

Hello, I run a specialist nursery for children aged 2 to 5 years. All of the children that attend have special needs which vary from mild learning difficulties and sensory impairments to Profound and multiple learning difficulties. I am really struggling in arranging my planning so that all the ages of the children, and their ability levels are catered for using one format. Does anyone have any suggestions?

Hi all, can anyone recommend a useful resource or supply good ideas for problem solving in maths with a reception class? My aim is to improve/ challenge children's thinking and problem solving skills and generally add some new activities to the usual areas of maths covered. Thanks and seasons greetings!
