Hello, It's been a long time since I have been on here, glad to see you are still doing a grand job! some advice please I have now taught in a mixed r/1 class for a term. As I was new to the school, I just continued to use the old teachers planning formats, however they are not really working for me. Over christmas I want to do a complete rehaul of both the way I plan and assess. I know it will be a lot of work but with OFSTED looming I feel it will be time well spent. What I am looking for is examples of mixed aged planning, how you keep your records, and also examples of observation forms. I hope this is not to cheeky to ask, but I am not getting that m…

Medium Term Planning

Hello, I teach children from a mixed rec year 1 class part time. I have been given a topic web for medium 'topic' planning then an A3 grid for week by week planning to come from the web. It is what the KS1 teachers use, with the National Curriculum subjects down one side then week by week across the top (so you show what is happening in each subject each week) I have tried to change it so it has the FS areas on it instead. I can understand how it is useful in KS1 to show cross curricular links but is such a format used generally in the foundation stage? Thank you

Target Setting In Reception And Beyond 1 2

We have been discussing target setting as a whole school issue, mainly thinking in terms of the children's predicted national curriculum levels etc. It has been suggested that in order to give Year One something meaningful to work with, we should use the p-scales in Reception, since the FSP doesn't give an easily quantifiable 'result'. I'm very dubious about this idea, as the p-scales are supposed to be for special needs children, not pre-national curriculum aged children. Does anyone have any thoughts on the matter?

Fsp Moderation

Hi, I'm being moderated this month (Nov 03) on my observations of 3 children and my choice of activity and how I write down my observation notes. The activity will be a Knowledge and Understanding/Personal and Social one. My activity is going to involve ice and lots of resources to encourage exploration and self selection of resources. Has anyone been moderated? Have any words of wisdom? Any good ideas on expanding the theme of ice for an open ended activity? Thank-you in advance

Hi I would be grateful for any advice any of you can give me. I have just moved into Reception after four years in Year 3 (my first post). I am teaching in a one form entry school and have had little support from within apart from being given copies of the Foundation Profile and Curriculum Guidance. I have one classroom assistant in the mornings and a different one in the afternoons in a class of 28 at present, two afternoons I am on my own. I have just experienced a week with a staggered intake of 8 to 14 with the remainder of the children starting next week. I love the age group , although I am finding the organisation quite overwhelming. How will I mana…

Planning Document Help Needed

HELLO I am not sure where to post this because i have been reading about how people manage there day. but here goes... I am feeling slightly confused at the mo - i work in a reception class of 26 children and following various courses that i have attended and after talking to other reception teachers i feel that i need to have a more integrated day routine. All of my planning up until this time has been completed using NLS and NNS format as well as a weekly plan divided into the six areas, and therefore i have tended to do Numeracy itme, Literacy time and then choosy, topic related activities in the PM. But just for fun i thought it would be good to mix the …

Individual Profiles

I've recently moved from a Reception/Year 1 class where I was working in a team to a 'pure' Reception class and have found your site invaluable in keeping me up-to-date with the latest issues and also feel like I am still part of a team and not completely isolated! The issue I'm trying to work through at the moment is about Children's profiles. I am beginning to record observations in a more systematic way than I have ever done before and am wondering in what format others keep these observations. I've read lots about children adding to them, putting photos in, sending them home etc. Each of the children in my class has their own book where they record focused acti…

We have the Skills Factory program "Curriculum Complete 4" but I can't find any resources useful to me. Is anyone else using this successfully? What about the new Early years version, is it any better? School has also just invested in "Espresso", not coffee, although I think that might be more useful! Anyone using that? Some useful tips would be much appreciated. Susan

Reception Ideas

HI, I am currently a teacher of Year 3, but will be moving into Reception in September. We recently had an Ofsted, who felt that teaching and learning in Reception was Unsatisfactory. I have been set the challenge of turning the Foundation Stage around (we have 1 reception class in our school). I would be really grateful for any ideas in any way, shape or form, that you have found useful, and that I can try to incorporate into my 'blank canvas', of the Foundation Stage! Thanks Julie.
