Help! Out of 30 only 4 can blend. We are under pressure by SMT to have all children blending ad segmenting and mine are not getting it. We do lots of modelling c-a-t is cat etc. I show them on the board. Model it and ask them to copy. I get answers like c-a-t is 'dog' or p-I-n 'kick'. Not even close!!! They know the sounds but can't blend or segment. don't really know how any other way to teach it and desperate for suggestions - help!!

We are about to undergo a new round of lesson observations by Headteacher and she has told us that she will be looking for progress made by children by the end of the lesson. The focus is writing. I was going to read' Dear Santa, Get well soon' and develop the story during the week then by the day of the observation I was going to tell the children that Santa is still not better and get them to write to him with a suggestion of what he could do, putting this into a card that they had made earlier in the week. The children in my class are able to write with support ( having just completed Phase 2 Letters and Sounds). However, I am worried that the progress in one lesson w…

Hi, I'm just planning an observed lesson for next week where I am focusing on describing the setting of the story. I am using Night Monkey, Day Monkey. Just wondering: when talking about story setting would you also describe the time of the day as part of the setting? Or would you stick to where the story happens? (I'm thinking this is a way of extending my higher ability - for further descriptions) (This is an activity for children aged 3 to 4) Thanks, Green Hippo x

Hi All I have been asked to support a year 1 colleague. I have taught nothing but foundation for 10 years, subject knowledge doesn't worry me but establishing a routine that balances the demands of the year 1 curriculum and access to play based learning does! Do people tend to do literacy numeracy in a morning and then a less structured afternoon with more choice and access to some CP? If so how do you organise this? Anybody who is willing to share an example of their planning and organisation I would be ver grateful thank you. J

I was called in to have a discussion today with the assessment co-ordinator regarding the impact our end of EYFS 'scores' have on KS1 targets. The school uses Fischer Famiy Tust targets and asthe ass co-or is saying that because we scored too high in FS then the targets for KS1 are unrealistic!! Our % of GLD was actually 4% lower than the 52% national and I am confident and stand by the judgements that we made. The problem is the ass co-ordinator will not accept my 'argument' that the FSP should not be used to create the KS1 targets as they are completly different curriculums!!! We are going to be having another meeting with the SLT to discuss the issue . . . any ad…

Hi, Does anyone have a separate form for recording intervention groups e.g. speech and language. I have a sheet where I record those with extra needs and what I will be doing with them, then just date each time completed an intervention with them. I would note on my weekly plans if I was adding anything to the environment for them as I would for other individuals. Does anyone record further than this? Thanks, Green Hippo x

Just a quick query. We are currently looking at writing mid year reports as a whole school and I wondered whether anyone else in Foundation Stage writes these? If so would it be possible to give me some sort of idea as to what you include.

Looking after ourselves

Hi, I am a teacher in a SEN early year unit. Next week we are carrying out activities relating to Looking after ourselves. I know quite a few things to do, however because my children are quite low (ranging from birth-11 to 22-36 months mainly) my ideas are quite above their level. I am new to this and am struggling. We want to do things that are relating to the prime areas. Anything would be good! Thanks in advance!
