Hi All, My jobshare teacher and I have just had observations of our Reception teaching which went well. However it was noticed that our reading corner, writing table and maths table weren't as appealing to the children as other areas and weren't used very much. We've been set a target of making these areas more exciting and appealing. As far as resources go, we have lots of different things (e.g. cards, different shaped papers, envelopes, post-its, different writing implements, etc. on the writing table) but it isn't enough to tempt the children. So I would love some advice, particularly how you display resources and maybe even photos of what you have done in your own cl…

Hi everyone, after some inspiration I have an observation for a new job on thurs I am currently doing goldilocks and the three bears I had planned to work on patterns and create a new patterned bowl for goldilocks in my adult focus. However I am struggling to think of a 'wow' input to the session. Any ideas would be gratefully received! X

I've got a few children this year working within 22-36 months in a lot of areas. Does anyone have any experience of supporting this stage of development within a reception class environment, I'm sorting out a visit to a nursery in my area to observe and discuss how they work, and especially to find out more about supporting language. But I just wondered with the wealth of knowledge on here you guys might be able to help? I've already decided to stop doing whole class inputs and instead work with small groups on differentiated inputs. I'm already using a child led/objective led environment rather than pulling children away from play aka ABC. C&L and PSED are my b…

https://www.education.gov.uk/consultations/index.cfm?action=consultationDetails&consultationId=1920&external=no&menu=1 Although this may not at first look like it has anything to do with you be warned. Section 5.6 has something that could be used to measure pre school effectiveness it would seem. The removal of any end of key stage/end of EYFS assessment based on observation and professional judgement of people who know the child, to replace it with a notional assessment "test" on entry is a dangerous thing in my opinion. This starts to build the removal of reception children from the EYFS in essence making them part of the Primary school assessmen…

Hi I've recently seen a lot of people talking about whether reception classes should stop, tidy up and go out to play with KS1. I was wondering if anyone could share any examples of their timetable if they don't stop for playtime. My school is possibly going three form in sept so I am considering breaking away from the traditional stop and tidy but I would really like to see how you organise your morning especially if you go through from 9 to 12. Also, do you have stop and sit down for snack time or have a rolling snack? How do you organise rolling snack? Give the children a set time frame? Do they have to post their name or something similiar when they have …

Looking for some ideas please. Reception class Outdoors we have been encouraging the children to work together to build dens. That seems to be happening but past few days some children have been using the drapes just to cover themselves on the floor. When asked what is happening they reply "We're having a sleep" I'm not sure how to move their learning on in this situation?? Or do we just leave them for the time being??? I did suggest that they might like to share a book with their friends before they sleep! I'm sure that this must happen in other settings any ideas please? Thanks gretna

End of year targets for reception
by Guest- 1 reply

We're trying to set end of year targets for each of our Reception children. Last year we set targets according to the 7 areas of learning but it didn't seem to work as the children achieved at different levels across some of the goals, e.g expected in reading but still emerging (40-60 months) in writing. We don't want to set a target for each child across the 17 early learning goals. Does anyone else set end of year targets for each child in Reception and if so how do you do it? Thanks

I'm being observed on Friday and need some inspiration please! I only teach Fridays and I've only taught my class for 2 full days and 2 half days - eek. The focus of the lesson is counting. I can't use the plans that have been planned I need to do my own, For the whole class input my jobshare teacher is getting the children to close their eyes and count how many bricks she drops in a box. On the original plan it was to get the children to close their eyes while a number of bean bags were put in a hoop and the children had to count them, then show good practise of counting, ie touching the bags, moving them etc. I'm really stuck! Any amazing ideas that I could do? I'd li…

I have a lovely class, 26 children and a part time TA. I have a pretty small classroom and a shared outdoor space with the pre-school which I can only use on a rotational basis ( so half of the day we are all stuck in the classroom). I Have some very boisterous and loud children and I don't know what to do with them to keep them busy when they are all couped up in the classroom. They want to be superheroes all the time or make guns etc with Lego. All I do is nag them to be quiet or stop what they are doing. I have 3 tables, a carpet area and a home corner. Please advise what I could put out/do to keep them amused and quiet!
