Hi, I have a girl in my class who's home language is polish. I had concerns over lack of speech so I asked a lady from a local nursery who is bilingual to come in and spend a bit of time playing with her to ascertain if she was just at the point of beginning to acquire English or if I was right to be concerned. I have never heard this child reply to mum or talk to the other polish children in class. She said that she was not understanding what was being said to her in polish, let alone English. She showed pictures and said words and the girl just nods - even when the word said is incorrect. She said she didn't speak any words, English or polish and just made babbling no…

Analysis of our profile scores has shown we need to focus on raising the achievement of our boys, especially in the area of writing. We are thinking about ways to make the learning environment appeal more to boys. Does anyone have any good ideas for motivating boys generally and, in particular, for getting them interesting writing? Thank you everyone.

Boisterous class!

Hi everyone... I could just cry. I've never had such a boisterous class like this, they are so fast and clumsy and are dreadful at listening, following instructions - e.g tidy up! I know it's so so early but I'm already feeling like I'm failing Am I missing a trick or two? I have stickers and raffle tickets to reward those who do. we have just implemented a walking safely chart, the person whose name appears most frequently will win a prize perhaps weekly, we have a thinking chair for time out, we have a toy dog who goes home for sleepovers each night with children who have earned it-tho this hasn't started yet. I just wondered if I'm missing/forgetting a useful s…

I've chosen 'uses talk in pretending that objects stand for something else' for my key child's next step as he is only just beginning to communicate with words and enjoys imaginative play. But now I'm a bit stumped as to what opportunities I could actually offer him to help him achieve this. Does anyone have any ideas?

Hi everyone, I'm struggling a bit with my boys. This year I have more boys than ever really interested in weapon play, catching games, batman, spiderman but also playing rockets and ANYTHING physical outside. We do not have a big space outside and (I know this is probably frowned upon, but in order for us to have free flow and limited accidents) I don't let them run full pelt - we do have times in the day when we go onto the large playground to let off steam! I've decided that my normal mantra of 'we don't shoot each other here' is inappropriate because they get so involved in their play and I really want to extend and support it - now that I've grown as a practi…

Year R/1 planning and daily routine

Hi everyone. I'm currently teaching a class of year r/1 children. There are 30 in the class and I'm evenly split with half year r and half year 1. I'm just so worn out with worrying that I'm doing the wrong thing that I thought it would be lovely to chat to others in the same position to see what you do. At the moment I'm really torn as all I want to do is help settle the year r children and guide them in using the cp etc. However with having year ones in the mix I feel we really need to push on with the curriculum. It's so hard trying to plan the day to suit both age groups! What does everyone else do? At the moment I'm thinking of splitting them into year groups for car…

Phonics support

I am by no means a phonics expert, having had no official training ( well any at all ). I have found it quite magic and have enjoyed the light it has shed on letters and words for children.... But I have a little boy in my mixed FS/ year 1 class that struggled last year. He has each individual sound pretty much sorted but he can't put them together. His attempt for e.g. J-a-m would be m-a-n... Is this a memory issue... Only retaining last diagrams and therefore using them first? Now this is a child with an appointment to see a S and L therapist and his speech was delayed considerably although he is now talking. Is he just gong to need more of the same with a view that h…

Continuous Provision Confusion!?!
by Guest- 4 replies

Hello, this is my first post although I have taken much needed advice from here many times before - super fab place!! Basically, I am in my second year of teaching a mixed R / 1 class and am still confused by CP. I work in a job-share and we have quite different views about how things should be set up. I would like to set up a series of activities / challenges at the begnning of the week and let these run throughout the week. Of course these would be extended, developed and changed based on observation throughout the week of the children's interests and engagement, etc. My job-share however, thinks that the children will become bored if the activities are not chan…
