Next year I've got a child joining my reception class who was apparently assessed a year ago as having a reading age of ten. Now, first of all I need to get a bit more detail about this from his mum - who assessed him, what assessment / test did they use etc.... but beyond that I was just wondering about our experiences of this in your classes - any good ideas? Things to bear in mind? He visited our class last week for a teddy bear's picnic and his teddy was the Enormous Crocodile and we had a lovely chat about Roald Dahl books! My concerns are really what he can do during the daily Letters and Sounds session (not sure how his writing is, so maybe that's an avenue I can …

Learning Journals in EYFS

Hi, this is my first posting so hopefully this will work! I am currently based overseas in a private school. We have tried numerous approaches to create a 'learning journey/scrapbook' for every child in FS. The problem seems to be making it managable, individual and not just a glorified scrapbook! We have involved parents but really this was just getting them to stick in the child's work and decorate the pages, not sharing the child's wow moments from home. I really do like the idea of an individual learning journal for each child, where the child selects the work to be stuck in, photos are recorded and we intend to use labels to record a child's thoughts about an ac…

Hi I am sure loads of you are already running stay and play sessions for parents. It is something I have thought about doing but never taken the plunge!! has anyone got any ideas / planning/ letters /activities they would be willing to share. I have looked on the internet and seen some ideas and pictures but there is no real detail. I am sure what I am thinking of will be fine but it would be great to have some advice - thank you.

Do you have the DMs on your plans that your activities cover? If not, do you track which ones you have covered in another way? Also for literacy and numeracy do you add detailed differentiated activities in separate boxes or just a brief outline of the activity and differentiate as and when you teach it? I am trying to shrink my planning down a little!

I'm struggling with what the "Children know about similarities and differences in relation to places, objects, materials and living things." sentence means - especially the living things bit. I found that I hadn't got much evidence for this for my profiles this year and am worried that I'm over complicating what I'm looking and planning for. I have read the exemplification but am finding it difficult to 'translate' this to the current interests/theme. At the moment we're going down an undersea creatures route (having looked at pond creatures and frogs) but now they want to know about the sea. I was planning to read Tiddler (as a class favourite) and talk about the …

Hi I am new to the forum and to teaching with the new eyfs curriculum. I am starting a new job in Sep with a mixed rec and year 1 class and want to run the class as an eyfs class with enhanced provision/focus activities for the year ones. Has anyone please got an example planning format I could look at as I am trying to get some ideas for the best way to tackle this. Thanks vry much.

Hi all, Just wondering what other people put in their writing area and/or around their setting to support and encourage writing of words and sentences once the children have started (and are progressing with) phase 2 phonics? Thanks Green Hippo x

When you are teaching capacity do you use the word capacity with the children? How do you explain it? Eg do you say 'We are trying to find out which container has the largest capacity?' Then explain 'So which container holds the most water?' Also, would you say 'we are learning about the capacity of containers today?' Sorry brain dead today.

Hi everyone! I have been a member for a couple of months now but this is my first post, woohoo! I would like some advice and feedback if possible. I'm looking into e based learning journeys using tablet/smart phone and have had a visit from a 'fingertips online' rep already. The program sounds brilliant but I would like to know what people who are using it think... what are the pro's/con's? Also if anyone is using another program that is similar I would love to hear what you like about it etc as it will be a costly decision and I want to get it right. Thanks for reading my first post everyone, hopefully the first of many ladymarmite

Hi I have been told I am putting to much detail into my planning and not differentiating enough between adult led, child initiated etc. Any one got any really good examples? Any completed examples to look at? Thank you very much, spent a whole year getting to this point so a bit disappointed to have to change it, it will however cut the time I spend doing it!
