My next theme is 'growing' and my children wanted to learn about how hot cross buns grow. I'm planning to do an adult let activity where we look at the effects of different temperatures of water on yeast but also had an idea but putting some slices of bread out in different conditions (damp, covered, open etc). and just leaving them to see what happened - we could have a diary where children record what they look like each day. I'm assuming they'll grow mould and wondered what the H&S implications might be - would it actually be dangerous? I'll obviously do a risk assessment but thought it might be a genuinely interesting investigation and lead into opportunit…

Can you use photographs of children in your portfolio when taking it to an interview at another school? The school has asked for examples of practice and as I work in reception great examples are photographs but i'm not sure if I can use them or not has anyone used them in a powerpoint or portfolio at interview? Thanks

Hello, following children's Tree Fu Tom obsession we are learning through the theme of fairies and elves next term. I have a few ideas involving outdoor play but not sure how to bring it inside too. Thinking elves and shoe maker as a story link.Tree Fu Tom also uses big magic so will try and link science experiments in through this. Any tried and tested ideas out there though?

Continuous provision in Year 1

HELP please!!!!! I have been working in Year 1 for 2 years now and was moved from Reception to make it more like Reception. Unfortunately this year I have been supporting a colleague who is also teaching Year 1 and she is having difficulties with the continuous provision. It has now come to the point where my headteacher is telling I need to make it more formal and I do not want to do this if possible, I am therefore asking for some examples of Year 1 planning that include Continuous provision. Thanks

Can anyone suggest a really meaty story book to read to a class of Reception children as part of an upcoming interview. The session is to last for around 15 minutes. I thought of using 'Winnie in winter' as there are lots of things to talk about in the illustrations.

Hi everyone. I'm returning from maternity leave after the Easter break. I started the year with this class and finished at October half term. I meant to bring the cover teachers planning folder home with me but I forgot it on the INSET day and school is closed. I'm not really sure where to start with literacy (writing), I know that this area is not as strong for them as it has been in previous cohorts. I thought about doing an activity around some new construction materials that I have bought, asking them to make a label for the box with sort of a 'contents' on it so they have to count and label the pieces, I was thinking I could make it into a bit of a competitio…

Hi, all I had an NQT obs today which went really well one point my head made was that my children are not very talkative they don't discuss, the language is just "transactional" she said. The children seemed monosyllabic even when I asked them good questions, these are 4 and 5 years olds, I have 10 and only 2 of them will talk purposfully when asked, is this usual? Does anyone have any advise to tackle this in my future planning? Thanks x
