Hi - I would really appreciate your thoughts around the DM statements. We are currently undertaking our Spring assessments (highlighting the DM statements we feel chdn have achieved and then identifying where they are working within the age band - emeging / developing competency / secure). As we were discussing ome of the statements last week a comment arose which made me question how we are making our judgments and I thought I would post on here to gather your thoughts. I'm sorry if this is a really obvious and silly question!!! When making the judgements to say a child has achieved a DM are you only highlighting it if you have seen it independently during child initi…

Hi everyone, just wondering if you could help inspire me. The children have shown a great interest in superheroes so thats where im going next but i'm a little stuck...i'm thinking superhero headquarters - telephone book with numbers for spiderman etc, keyboards and paper for children to write missions, capes, instructions how to make ben 10 watches (from the kids) etc but I just can't visualise it at all. I know it could be exciting i'm just struggling with this role play. Also does anyone have an issue with high ceilings and just 1 large rectangle room when trying to make the role play area more like a seperate room? Any ideas how to overcome it? As i'd like materia…

Hi, I am an NQT in a sole Reception/Nursery class in a RI school with a strong EY backgroud (Diploma in childcare, experience and specialised EY PGCE) and in the middle of my NQT year (last term ofsted graded me satisfactory). The Early Years advisor came out and said "I couldn't do a better job myself" My old mentor who loved my work left in December and my new head (my new mentor) started in Jan. She has not liked my ethos from the word go and doesn't like Reception and Nursery mixed (which I have now) she doesn't like the learning to be child led, wants more adult led and wants my teaching to be more like "teaching" if you know what I mean and heavily critised me when …

Understanding the World-Help

Our children come into our Reception class with very low scores across the board. In most areas of learning the children have made good progress and a large percentage are at least in line where they should be. However our scores in all areas of understanding the world apart from technology are still low. We plan understanding the world activities each week. Not sure if we are reading too much into the statements for 30-50 and 40-60+ and ELG or what we are planning is wide of the mark! we have a very young class this year ( 15 out of 28 are summer born with 6 born in the last 2 weeks of August), 18 boys and 12 with differing degrees of SAL issues including EAL. The talk a…

Hello everyone, I was just wondering how everyone is getting parent and child contributions into their learning journeys? I have recorded children's interests, who they like to play with, what makes them happy/sad etc but i'm a little bit unsure what else to put in/do. Thanks

Hello I was wondering if anyone has any ideas for enticing boys into the creative area. I am finding a lot of the time it's the same girls in this area and the same group of boys building with the blocks. Thanks

I do guided reading with my class twice a week. They have a reading input and every child is heard read twice in the week (as requested by the head) I went to see the literacy co-ordinator for advice as my bottom group have finish pink band books and were struggling with them. The co-ordinator was asking how often we read and wasn't happy to discover we only do 2 reading sessions a week. I explained what we do but she wants to see daily 20min guided reading session with every child reading with an adult twice and reading/developing reading skills independently at all other times! I explained that Ofsted, our early years advisor and the eyes guidance said we should be spli…

The new points system!

Morning everyone - I desperately need some help as I have been on a course run by the local authority this week and am totally confused!!!!!!! Firstly we have been told we no longer need to be doing learning journals. I appreciate that the new EYFS is much more about being with the children but we have been told that at moderation we just need to speak about our children confidently and there is not the need to back that up with evidence. My SLT and Ofsted I am sure will not appreciate that!!! Secondly we have been told that the children need to get at least 30 points to be an 'expected' child. This has thrown me completely - apparently you gain up to three poin…
