Hi all! can anyone help?! Do we need to be doing more narrative focused observations around the characteristics of learning? Do you have a particular format if you do this? I am a wee bit lost with this!

I work in a reception class and usually send out a school report at the end of reception year, however this year i have been asked to produce a report at the end of every term. The one sent out in July is a detailed report of the 6 areas of learning, teacher comment and a head teacher comment. The head decided to make it easier and cut down on all the writing for all the classes which i can see is easier for the older children because the teachers have boxes to tick and make a quick comment but im not sure how to go about it for Reception class. If anyone would be kind enough to share their ideas i would really appreciate it. kazi

Playtime

We have 76 children in Reception split over 3 classes. We don't have 3 classrooms as such but 3 open plan areas and an outdoor area. Each area inside has a main focus eg literacy, Maths, creative/UW but any area if learning happens in each area with plenty and varied continuous provision and play opportunities. My problem is that the outdoor area isn't used enough as it doesn't lend it's self to free flow due to the layout of the building. The classes move around the areas inside each day but the outdoors is only used as and when. We seem to spend so much time lining up children for the the toilet before snack time and playtime, as well as putting coats in etc for a 20 mi…

Summative assessment
by Guest- 8 replies

Hi All, I am new to teaching Reception and generally finding it quite tough. I have been a teacher for 6 years but mainly in KS1 with a bit of KS2 experience. My biggest bugbears are planning, observation and assessments. I am used to doing mainly summative assessments alongside formative assessments, but I am confused as to whether there should be any summative assessments at all in Reception? I went on an observation course yesterday and summative assessment wasn't mentioned at all. This is what my school are expecting me to do over the next couple of whole school "assessment weeks"; Letters & sounds assessment Number recognition to 10 then 20 Writing numbers…

What do you count as everyday? Days of the week? Months? Yesterday/today/tomorrow? Weekend? This is my main objective for next week and I'm struggling to think of how to teach it as well as how much to teach. I've got The Hungry Caterpillar and The Bad Tempered ladybird in mind as possible starting points although I'm certain there's another days of the week story I just can't remember what it is. We've reached something of a hiatus interest wise so I feel I can use anything although obviously I want to engage them too!

Hi all, I hope you are all having a lovely weekend and are not too overwhelmed with Nativity fever. I have our performance songs going round and round in my head and have embraced it full force. After all it is December in 6 days Just wondering if anyone had any inspirational ideas for measuring length both for indoor and out. I'd appreciate any ideas, looking for new approaches and exciting ways. Thank you

I have an interview!

Hi! If you've been reading my previous posts you'll know how upset and ill I've been in my current job, so I've been applying elsewhere and I'm so excited! I have an interview for a Teaching Assistant at a really prestigious primary school next week and they said that they very much enjoyed reading my supporting statement - I've never had anything specific like that as feedback so that sounds promising! They've asked me to prepare a 10-15 minute learning activity (based on CLL) for 5 or 6 children. They gave me the choice of FS1 or FS2. This will be my first ever TA job (I have a BA in Early Childhood Studies and EYPS so most of my experience has been in nurseries…

Hi All, I have had some fantastic and time-saving resources from here and thought would share what I have in terms of Progress Check at 2 as well as summary of development and learning. Any comments and suggestion to make it better and user-friendly would be appreciated.
