When I taught in reception two years ago (now in year 2) I had a PLOD (possible lines for development) sheet at the front of each childs learning story. I would update this at least half termly with their key next steps on for each area of learning. I would plan activities based on groups of children sharing silimar next steps and support children in their play with these. I have discovered that the reception teachers are no longer doing this and I feel we now have nothing in place which shows that we are planning to children next steps and interests. Are people in reception class using these? or how else to do record next steps? I used to write next steps next to ke…

Hi all, This year we are going to use the Emerging, Developing, Secure system to assess and track our children for summative assessments(previously we were expected to just give the age and stage that they were secure in and used our own knowledge of the children to inform the next steps in learning for planning). Just a little confused over the 'definitions' for Emerging and Secure. I am just thinking that if a children is secure in say 22-36 months, then that suggests that they would be 'emerging' in 30-50 months. So I just need to have a definate separation between the two. Could someone just give me a quick definition of what you would class as secure but not emergi…

Hi I have always responded to children's ideas in my planning but have always had a pretty good idea of where I am going. I want to have a go at doing things differently and so next term have come up with the theme 'magnificent journey' and am prepared for that loose theme to take us wherever- to space, under the sea Etc. I have talked to the children about it and sent a letter home asking for stories/ photos and the first day back we will start planning with the children. I just wondered if anyone had any ideas for other themes which could go in a variety of directions according to interests. Deb

Planning for children ready to read

Hello all.... There is a girl in my room, who will be turning 4 next month and is showing an interest in learning how to read.... Her parents have started reading with her at home but are teaching her letter names rather than letter sounds (phonics)... after speaking to my collegues they are all very anti supporting her in developing this emerging skill, and have told me that I am not allowed to work on this with her as we are not allowed to "teach" reading or writing in early years. I fully understand that all children may not be ready for this at this early age, however I feel strongly that we should support all childrens needs and interests, and just as we supp…

Differentiating Phonics Sessions

Does anyone have this issue when differentiating phonics - the children who are HA in phonics are not ness. HA in writing, so when you are tasked with a phonics session including writing and learning sounds/blending etc. it becomes very difficult, making me think I should do phonics without writing, does anyone else do this? Have any thoughts?

Writing in reception

Hi - After half term Ive been asked to lead an inset on writing and the judgements we make about the children's writing using the development matters scales. Its an inset that will be attended by 6 different schools in the local area and Im guessing the aim is to get us all singing from the same song sheet so to speak. I thought I would gather up different examples of writing from children and get groups of staff from different schools to work together to discuss which elements of development matters they can see and make decisions on the age bracket they think the children are working in. Also I thought more importantly we could discuss the provision for Early writing in…
