Hello, I'm in the process of reviewing my day. I wondered how many of you out there, in reception, do a maths and a literacy based focus each day? Does anyone do a literacy focused morning which alternates with a maths based morning??

In FS2 our children have been full time for 2.5 weeks now we have only finished baselining about a third of a group of 42 children. Our head of eyfs for our LA is coming in tomorrow and wants to see all of our baseline data. Should we have finished baselining by now because we haven't!!!!

Hi, One of my TAs is doing her EYPS at the moment and got chatting to a couple of teachers on one of the college days yesterday. Both my TAs (and the TA in Reception) do observations, help with up-dating learning journals and have an input in the assessment and next steps. However, these teachers were surprised at how much she did and said that they couldn't ask their TAs to do this as they wouldn't know how! They record observations but everything else is completely left to the teacher. I never ask my TAs to take anything home (but they do off their own back occasionally) and I catch up with whatever is behind. They say that they like up-dating their key-groups journal…

Segmenting and blending?
by Guest ChunkyMan- 5 replies

Am I being thick or something but are children expected to orally and aurally segment and blend prior to recognising grapheme (phase 1) or is it something to be done together. Has Ruth Miskin written this part of the Development Matters as it fits quite nicely with RWi? The reason why I ask this is because the children in my F2 class this year started RWi in the last term of F1 (on the advice of RWi rep) and about 2 thirds now know most of their initial sounds, however only about a quarter of the class can segment and blend consistently, my arguement is that , in my opinion unless they are secure with segmenting and blending (don't start me on rhyming and alliteration!!!!…

Hi! My memory is not what it used to be! Someone told me yesterday that 'next steps' are no longer to be referred to as that but by a different name but I cannot remember what it was. It was two words and not 'PLODS'. I liked it and would like to use it. Can anyone help???

NQT observation - help please
by Guest- 6 replies

Hi everyone, I have my first NQT observation next week and i'm having a major mind blank. The topic is based loosely around Autumn and Harvest at the moment. I was considering reading a book with the whole Reception class as a basis and then divide into indoor/outdoor activities and C/I as normal. My first 2 ideas were: Use the Little Red Hen as a starting point --> Read the story using the Pie Corbett actions getting the children to join in to the story (which is familiar to most the class) then divide the children up and I lead either an indoor or outdoor activity based on the book. However here is where I am getting stuck. I am trying to think of some 'WOW' …

Problem Solving

Hello everyone! We have decided to have a focus on problem solving next term (I teach a reception). We are looking to focus on this for 4 weeks, covering a range of mathematical areas. By the time we come to do this we will have focussed on 2d shapes, 1-1 counting, 1 more/less, ordering numbers and missing numbers. Our topic is dinosaurs so we would hope to link the majority of the maths to this. I have to admit problem solving activities often scare me and I will usually over think activities when im sure there are many simple but effective ways! Could anyone help me out with some ideas please, I would ideally like 1open ended problem to be planned in for each week so t…
