by Guest- 9 replies

HI Am starting to pull my hair out with my class and their writing. I just don't know what to do to encourage more child-initiated writing. I stock my writing table drawers with white and coloured paper and they draw, cut stick, make allsorts of things. But writing...There are whiteboards and pens - nope! There are pictures related to our current 'topic' - nope! I've made pirate pictures with speech bubbles - nope! I've made various list formats - nope! I've used various different formats in different role-play area, including sand trays but still they don't want to write. They can do some great writing when in an adult-directed group but how do you get yours writ…

Jubilee Week

hi guys, I am thinking of doing a Jubilee week next week for my children. I am hoping to look at the queen, what she does and what she looks like. We are going to look at where she lives and who her family are. I am planning on getting the children to think about their own families and have a go at making a family tree and comparing it to the queen's. We will make flags and bunting, and bake some cakes etc for a jubilee party on the friday with the rest of the school. I also have an idea flying around in my head of looking at pictures of our local area at the time that the queen became the queen (not too sure if i will find any pictures, but there is a chance) and c…

Support With Outdoors

After Easter I start a new job as an EYFS leader. The development area for the setting is outdoor provision. Both classes have free flow access to the outdoors which is fantastic. I am currently trying to get ideas together as to how to utilise the space in the best way. I am wondering if any one has any outdoor planning I could look at or if anyone has any advice on getting the most out of the outdoors? We will have some money to spend in September but not before then and I am keen to start creating a vision over the summer term when the weather is good. Thanks in advance, Em

Hi everyone, I am updating our current nursery prospectus and wanted to add a leaflet/ sheet that focuses on all of the positive things that parents can do at home to help their child to develop. Does anyone have anything like this? Are you able to share it if you do have one? My children in particular need support in skills such as toileting, colour recognition, counting and speaking and listening but I was also thinking of including fun activities such as skipping and gross motor activities to help them with their writing. Many thanks! x

Hi I've recently moved into reception and don't feel like I know what I'm doing at all. I was previously in Year 1/2 and using continuous provision but I still think I'm being to KS1. I'm not sure how each day should run. Do I still spend an hour on literacy/numeracy? How long the children should spend with me/ choosing? I worry especially about Literacy. How long I should spend observing? How long do I use 1 text for? I know these are really basic questions and I am going to visit another experienced teacher later this week but I wondered if anyone had any good advice or know any good books that would help me get to grips with things.

Hi my reception class have been given India for international Day we are supposed to be performing a song or dance/ presentation in assembly for the parents to watch any ideas please. So far we have made flags and done some simple craft things - we have painted Taj Mahal, tiger and peacock paintings, elephants masks but I am stuck for song/ dance. I was thinking of a simple hand movements or Bollywood dance? 4 children in the class speak Malayam and I have asked parents for costumes or to come in and teach a nursery rhyme/ song or counting but they say they feel too shy to help.I found some ideas on Mama Lisa website but it still seems too hard for myself to lear…

Fire/volcano Theme
by Guest- 3 replies

The children in our class have been making 'volcanoes' in the sandpit (just heaps of sand really!) and we are going to develop this with a theme of Fire/Volcanoes and set the role play area up as a Fire Station. If anyone else has covered this theme, I would love to hear what you did as I am a little lacking in inspiration at the moment! Thank you.

Hi there, I have been asked to look into transition and home vists for this year. Previosley children have come to school for 2 weeks half days and in the afternoons over 2 weeks we have done home vists. Personally, I found this usefull and great op to get to know parent/ child in thier environment. However my head asked if I could see if other schools were still doing home vists? is it still a big thing or did it get pushed out? We do get parents who complain as they have to take 2 weeks off work. This year I have proposed that they come to school for 1 week (mornings only) with the key worker meeting each parent in the afternoon but within the classroom ( no on…
