Hi all, Just wondering how others teach name writing as I've seen so many different ways of doing it and am also aware of differing opinions about how NOT to do it! We currently have all the children's names handwritten on laminated cards which match the picture on their peg. These name cards are velcroed to the side of the mark-making cupboard. We initially play 'finding-name' games to show the children where their name is, then encourage children to find their name if they are attempting to write it. They can also practise writing over it with the whiteboard pens. Currently, we don't do any trace-writing on paper e.g. over dots but I noticed that my son's Nursery did …

Hi everyone, I really want to do the farmer, chicken, fox and bag of grain story with my reception children next week as we really need to do some problem solving but... does it actually count towards any PSRN problem solving profile points?? If not where else in the profile points does it feature? If anyone doesn't know the story it is that a farmer is on his way home and comes across a river and a small boat. He has with him a chicken, fox and bag of grain. He cannot take more than himself and one other in the boat or it will sink. He cannot leave the chicken and the fox or the fox will eat the chicken, he cannot leave the chicken and the grain or the chicken w…

Hi all, As we all know the Olympics are coming! We have been given a country to support each class and I have been given Bahrain. I don't know ANYTHING about it to be honest so will be researching like mad. BUT I wondered if anyone knew (long shot!) of any books based in Bahrain! Or any good Islamic books that are suitable for EYFS. I want to ground it as much as possible cos it's going to be so hard for them to grasp. Thanks in advance h x

Hi everyone, I am an NQT teaching Reception and I am having an observation by my mentor tomorrow in PRSN. This week we have been focusing on problem solving but I am hoping that you could inspire me with some fresh ideas. I was wanting an exciting/interesting/engaging problem solving activity for the carpet session and then I thought it may be nice for me to have a focus group outside for some problem solving outdoors. Any ideas at all would be REALLY appreciated. Thank you so much in advance. Sarah x

Hi all, We are due Ofsted very soon and this Friday we have a 'friendly' Ofsted inspector coming to do a review of the school. I will be out with my class during the morning at Forest School so she will be coming to watch me on Friday afternoon. A terrible time as my class are exhausted by then, especially after being out in the morning! We will mostly be doing Child Initiated Learning, but I'll need to do a short carpet time first. Our focus this week is Spring and during the morning we'll be looking for signs of Spring in the woods. I really need some 'wow' ideas for a carpet time to follow on from this, and maybe some things for enhancements to the continuous pro…

Organisation Of New Intake

Our school is changing to two form entry next year with 60 children (2 classes) starting in the Foundation Stage in Sept 2012 instead of our usual 30. I would be interested to hear from other similar schools how they decide which children should go into each class. Do you divide them by age, alphabetically or do you keep them as one class of 60 and group them, for example, for phonic work? Also, once they are put into a class, do they stay in that class until Year 6 or do you have a change around (maybe at the end of KS1). Would love to know what works for you. Thank you.

I'm just wondering how everyone organises their long observations? We have previously been told that it is necessary to do 1 per term for each child. Is this set in stone does anyone know, or a bit of a myth? We find the long observations really useful at the beginning of the year as we get to know the children but at this point of the year we are finding them a little pointless. We rarely catch wow moments and are only observing things that we already know. Short post it observations when we see/hear wow moments seem much more valuable as we already know the children really well by now, so don't need to write down everything we see. Do we need to still be doi…

This term everyone at my school is having a History or Geography Observation, therefore as i am in reception i am having a KUW lesson observation. The head and humanities subject leader is coming to observe an whole class input followed by child initiated and possibly a small group activity on Monday. The problem is i haven't a clue what to do! this week we are having a whole school science week and the week before we had a bit of a focus on calculation. We haven't really got a topic at the moment just enchantments based on children's interests. I feel dried up of creative ideas i feel i have gone all out for science this week and now i am a bit stumped where to go! Just …
