Hi I was lucky enough to attend the Early Excellence EYFS conference yesterday. As part of this conference they told us about the hundred review. This is following on from the likelihood of a complete review of EYFS based on some of the things written in the report Effective Teaching Practice in Primary Schools. Some of the ideas considered to be effective are very alarming to me! For example, suggesting that the most effective Reception classes are those that bring elements of Year 1 into their practice... Anyway definitely worth reading the report but if you would like to be part of research that is based on what actual practitioners see as effective go to the Early…

Hello, I am new here and looking for some help. I've tried googling any information I can find on this but to no avail. I'm working in a Reception class and they have a success criteria for child initiated time in the afternoon. It includes points about choosing resources, sharing, having fun etc. I haven't heard of this and it doesn't sit right with me. I'm willing to be enlightened. Anyone else do this?

This site seems like a magical find - although I can't pretend it doesn't give me the jitters to discover that some NQTs have been preparing all summer...! Yikes . I've been on holiday. I restricted my planning/preparing time to the final two weeks or I KNEW I'd spend the whole summer in my classroom - was I crazy to do this??! What I'm wondering is if anyone can help to give me and other NQTs (who I know are all panicking about the same thing!) an idea of what on earth to do with 30 children when they arrive in September. I will have 17 on the first day (from school nursery), then another 3 each day until I get the full 30 by the second week. Unusually, these w…

Although this article is about teaching in secondary schools it resonated with me about how we ask questions throughout a child's school life - I am sure that there are aspects of good practice that we can all draw from this. What do you think? (and I'm going to choose someone to answer, so you'd better all pay attention! .... I'm really not!) Five steps to effective questioning

Hi everyone, Im new here and just after a bit of advice and a bit of insight. I have an interview for next Tuesday at a first school for a teaching assistant position and have to prepare for an activity which they are going to observe me on. For your observation, we would like you to bring or devise a game of your choosing, suitable for a mixed ability Foundation Stage group of children. This game can be based around any aspect of the curriculum. Please also provide an overview of how you would use the game with these children. I was just wondering what ideas you would have for the activity as feeling a bit rusty as did a course a few years back and this is my firs…

In the National Curriculum guidance to the Year 1 maths it states: Pupils are taught half and quarter as 'fractions' of discrete and continous quantities by solving problems using shapes, objects and quantities. Pupils connect halves and quarters to equal sharing and grouping of sets of objects and to measures. 1. Discrete and continuous quantities 2. objects and quantities 3. sets of objects and measures - Do they mean the same thing? And do they mean number of objects and amounts, i.e. countable and uncountable quantities? We have two children who can find and name a half and a quarter of an object, shape and number of objects which can be divided …
