Hi all, I have just come back to work after a long period of sickness and would like to know if anyone can help me on 2 subjects. First I need to develop a child information sheet to fill in with parents/carers when doing their home visit. This info needs to give us lots of info about what their child is able to do before coming to school. Secondly I have come back to this progress matters document. We have been using e profile in Reception to track progress but it looks like double the workload for the Reception teachers to carry out, e profile and progress matters. However I cannot see how just using the progress matters on its own would work as it is not broken…

Snack Time In The Afternoon

Hi there I had a parents' appointment this afternoon (they couldn't make the date in October). Anyway I've been aware that the parents have food issues. Mum has asked me to make sure she chooses the animal protein meal (in those words). She has also complained about them being offered a small piece of bread to go with their pizza as that's too much carbohydrate. Anyway the food part of the meeting started when they were asking is the children can choose what they eat. I said that the dinner ladies should monitor what they eat and inform me if anyone is not eating but I hadn't been old anything but I would speak to them about it. The mum then started asking about…

Writing In The Writing Area
by Guest- 6 replies
- 3.7k views
Any tricks or tips to get my children actually writing at the writing area? I have all the usual exciting pens and notepads, as well as whiteboards and templates for things like letters and lists etc, plus blank paper (lined, squared and plain alternately). At the moment all the children want to do though is draw, they even turn over the pre-made templates and draw on the back of the pieces of paper, taking the markers and the felt tips to this area to do the drawings rather than using the laid out resources. These are year one children and this is driving me crazy, there is a place for drawing, but these children really need to be mark making and writing at least som…

Not Accessing Phonics?
by Guest- 4 replies

I have a child who doesn't appear to be picking up phonics at all, even though he is in the top 10% of the class in terms of reading ability. His writing is very poor and it is becoming obvious that phonics just isn't for him. Everything he can read I'm sure he must have learnt by sight and he uses strategies such as predication and looking at pictures to help him decipher text. He's is actually a really good reader compared to most year one children I've come across, not just this class. What can we do for him? We went on phonics training recently and they mentioned children like this and said that there might be 10% of children in a class for whom phonics will never…

Lesson Observation Criteria Please
by Guest- 19 replies

Hi everyone, Do any of you know (or does your school use) a lesson observation proforma for grading observations under OFSTED criteria? Our primary school has one and the same criteria are used throughout all year groups. What about observed lessons in FS2? Are you expected to have an objective, clearly defined in a starter, with a main session and then a plenary? Feeling really fed up and cross about the uncertainty as to what is actually 'good' in early years.
