Staggered intake in September

Hi I was wondering, do you stagger your nursery or reception intake in September? Or do you get them in for the full entitlement from day 1? I understand that nursery are entitled to begin 15 hours from day 1 due to funding but some settings stagger this. I know some reception classes stagger it by bringing all of the children in until 1pm at the beginning, then increasing it gradually so the eldest will start full time, and stagger this over 2-3 weeks before they are all in full time. I would appreciate your thoughts. Thanks

Hi everyone, I'm moving into Y1 with my current class in September, and they are a 'tricky' little lot! I'm after some advice about how people structure their day/learning in the first autumn term. I've got a strong group of children who are well ready ( and ready for more structure/ adult led ) for year 1, but there are also children who need to be working with development matters because they aren't secure at 30-50 so need an eyfs approach. I'm sure I do know how to do it (in that I'm currently meeting their needs and so can continue to do so) but I do want it to feel different for them so they 'know' they've moved up. I will have an LSA for most of the time. I'm prob…

I am doing some supply work and I have been asked to make some French flags with a reception class. Thought it would be fun using a variety of collage materials including pulses and rice (correct colours of course). This would make them very heavy. The teacher wants the children to wave them in assembly. Has anyone got any tips and what can I attach them to make the pole. In the past I have attached to 2 straws taped together. Any help much appreciated!!!!

My school are investing money into the EYFS outside classroom. I was wondering if any one has had any recent developments at their schools and could recommend the companies / contractors that were used? Many thanks!

Yesterday I was really intrigued to see one of my boys in our making area. He never normally goes anywhere near it. It turned out that he was cutting up an art straw so he could use it for smoking. I was a bit taken aback. We had a general conversation about smoking - mainly led by one of the girls who said her daddy smoked but that he said she shouldn't because it would make you poorly. I feel like I could have done more but I'm not sure what. What would you do/have done?

I am keen to develop the children's transition into year 1 and was wondering if anyone had any positive experiences to share please. Also wondering if anyone had some positive experiences or practise on how the R and 1 teachers worked together prior to the children's move? Or positive practise that has worked well in terms of assessment once the children leave R and enter 1? We currently do some transitional mornings where Class Reception children go to a year 1 classroom to take part in activities and we do a meet the teacher morning, once the teachers have all been finalised for September. Last year the children wrote their year 1 teacher a letter to tell them all …

Hi I cover PPA in YR and currently do PSED as a circle time. It is a large class so they split into 2 groups -half with me, half with the TA. I take the 2 groups out of the class to do circle time. It has been suggested ( don't ask!    ) that I keep each group out as long as possible ( the rest of the afternoon is freeflow). I am finding that the children are struggling to sit and concentrate ( it's a Friday afternoon) and feel it needs to be short and to the point, not pointlessly drawn out/ So, Reception teachers, at this stage in the year how long is too long sitting doing circle time/story linked to it? I remember when we had out Nursery EC…

I'm not sure if this is really the correct forum for this post, I am really excited as I am lucky enough to be going to South Africa in 2 weeks . My school has a link with a school there and for me this is a dream come true. Whilst there I will be visiting Crèches in townships run by local mums , I have been asked to take gifts with me , I have to be careful not to go over my baggage limit and wondered if anyone has ideas of what I could take ? Obviously the lighter the better. Any suggestions would be appreciated thank you

Hi All, I have a safeguarding query which is concerning me. I work in a school setting, in a reception class. At present we only allow children to be collected by a named adult who is over the age of 18 years. A parent has spoken to me about difficulties coming to collect her child at the end of the day because she now needs to work, his dad is working and sometimes they might need his older sister to collect him. The older sister is 15 years old. Where do we stand with this? Thank you for your help. J

Show and Tell

I think it's lovely to give the children the opportunity to share things... previously children have been allotted a week to do their show and tell, but I'm not sure it's fair for children to have to wait weeks if they have something exciting to share. How do you organise it? Any exciting ideas? Thanks
