Hi I really need some opinions on which is preferable and why: Reception/Y1 class Nursery/ Reception class With either scenario there would also have to be a Reception only class. Trying to build an argument for N/R but need views either way! Also, do nursery staff feel there is a difference in what is done/ achieved in morning or afternoon sessions, despite following the same curriculum/ planning? Thank you!!

Summer Term

Hi I am a NQT working in Reception and been asked to change the structure of the lessons for the last term to prepare the children ready for year 1. Currently we have literacy and maths each day but only work with one group of children while the others have free choice in all the areas of provision including outside. I thought about having more focused activities for example when doing literacy have literacy activities out related to our topic or story. What do you think? Would be interested to hear what other people do. x

RE in a Catholic School

Help...RE in a Catholic school is driving me mad. I teach reception and we follow 'people of God'. When it comes to assessment the powers that be want us to conform to levelling the children. I am extremely against this as we are not Key Stage 1. We have a different curriculum and I always seem to be fighting them. When I ask for support I get 'I don't know I will ask' but nothing ever comes from it. What should I do? I think I may book appointment with RE coordinator and head. Please tell me what happens in your school

Class maths games

I'm looking for some new ideas for short maths carpet sessions with my reception class. My class like this game Who’s got the most? 2 teams and dice each. All throw the dice at the same time. The one with the highest number wins a point. The first to 10 points is the winner. Can play the lowest number thrown ……..or the number closest to 3….. or find total ... Anyone like to share their class maths games please? Thanks

Hi i am struggling to fit everything into the school day with a morning and afternoon play and daily worship, does any one have any advice or success stories about stopping breaks and carrying through till lunch, Any advice or help appreciated, i would also appreciate any advice on how best to suggest it to SLT, I think the stop/start nature of playtime is disruptive to play and playtime can have a negative impact on behavior but i want to put across a good case or i know they will refuse as SLT dont like change. Thanks in advance xx

Reluctant home readers

Wondered if anyone has some interesting ideas to help me inspire my YR class, or their parents! As a group they are not very good at home reading, even going through keywords feels like I'm walking through treacle! I'm going to make some certificates for keywords awards which will be given out during celebration assembly, have written letters home about the importance of daily practice but seem to be getting nowhere fast....of course I have those who read the letters and support their children with keywords and they are reading well but what can I do about the others, and then there are the ones who read a book once and think that's enough! My feeling is I need t…

Advice needed please-silly behaviour

Hi Not sure if I have put this in the correct place. I am an nqt in reception class and would like some advice on how best to deal with silly behaviour. I have been observed regularly by both my headteacher and mentor and so far recieved good for my observed lessons and both gave said I am doing well however some days I feel I am struggling with silly behaviour. It is from a minority of children but they then influence the more sensible children. It began after one of the more difficult children began attention seeking behaviour and they seem to be copying. One even said if im silly in assembly can I sit next to you! This is not all the time but we are due ofsted any …
