Thought I would post this for those who want to respond. Looks like we may be reverting back to how it used to be! http://www.ofsted.gov.uk/resources/consultation-introduction-of-separate-graded-judgements-early-school-years-and-sixth-form-september Argh...can't attach it as a link!

I am interested in hearing people's opinions on the contentious issue of handwriting. How it's taught is a very personal thing as each and every practitioner usually has their own, very strong beliefs. So here goes.... I am against teaching cursive script from day one however many schools in my area do it and argue for it. I also spend lots of time working on pre writing skills such as gross motor and write dance before formal handwriting begins. However I am now beginning to question this and wonder whether we should start letter formation straight away as many children start writing on their own and pick up bad habits. I also truly believe that in order to h…

Just wondered how much formal recording (if any?) folk do in maths in reception classes? We have a daily maths input and then each group works with an adult once a week on a guided activity. We usually do this through games. We haven't done any formal recording so far and now wondering if we should have been doing some??? We encourage the children to record numbers outside when appropriate and write post its/take photos of maths learning in continuous provision. looking for some advice please. Thanks

Hello I was just wondering if anyone could offer any advice? Last term we employed a teacher temporarily to cover the Easter Term (until someone comes back after maternity leave). During interview the teacher stated that she needed to finish off her last term of her NQT year and would the school support her. My head asked me to mentor her as I have a lot of experience mentoring trainee teachers etc so I agreed. I got her file ready etc and at our first meeting discovered that the situation was a bit more complex than expected! She completed her first two terms of her NQT year 3 years ago?! And has been working for a supply agency ever since. My head contacted somebody fro…

We have recently acquired a dark den and we are keen to set it up in class. We have a few general ideas but wondered what other people put in their dark den? Any activities to promote writing in there (with torches of course!) Thanks

Ofsted advice

I am hoping that someone will be able to answer a question with regard to schools in 'special measures'. We are due an Ofsted inspection next spring. Our last inspection came out as 'good'; however, Ofsted spent much time in KS1 due to poor SATs results and spent very little time in the nursery unit. The KS1 SATs results have fallen again, despite measures being put in place, and I am wondering if our next inspection might take us into 'special measures'. My question is this ... if a school is placed in special measures what happens? I know that inspectors pay numerous visits over the course of the year, but would this be for every class in the school or just the 'prob…

Hi there I have to write a new EYFS policy. Can anyone tell me what should be included in this? Can anyone send me an example of one that their governors/head teacher find acceptable? Thank you

Hi Everyone, In May my school is having a science week and this year the theme will be animals. As the nursery teacher, I have been asked to arrange an animal themed visit to the school, for the foundation stage children. The visit needs to cater for 164 children (not all at once throught the day) aged 3 -5. We have had visits from a farm in previous years but this year we have limited space due to building works and no school field, so the animals would probably inside in a hall for the day or in a small concrete area. I don't mind which kind of animals visit us. However, it would be nice to have something other than mini beasts, lizards, frogs etc as we have seen these…
