Religious Stories For Nursery
by Guest- 2 replies

Hi there, We have been asked to look at a religion as part of our multi-cultural week. We are a catholic school so tend to base our religion based activities around a story from the bible. As religions can be quite complex for younger children I was hoping to find a story from one of the other religions that I could use as a starting point. The only stories I can find are Rama and Sita - which we looked at during Diwali and the story of Ganesha - which is about a boy having his head chopped off and replaced with an elephants head. But Ganesha is one of the Hindu Gods so it might be nice for children to understand why he has an elephants head. Not sure whether…

Construction Work Bench And Tools
by Guest- 5 replies

Hi, I am trying to set up an outdoor workbench and construction area so the children can use real tools and materials, but am having trouble finding more child-friendly things like saws, hammers etc. I don't want toy tools, but thought that hardware stores like B&Q might have kids versions of the real things. My major problem is that I am teaching in China , so need to rely on websites to find them. I tried B&Q website with no luck. Any ideas or links? Shipping hopefully will not be a problem, as many staff members go to the UK, US and Canada for the summer. I can have the workbench made here, but it would be great to see examples of what is available. …

Great Activity

Hi it's me again! Just thought I would share with you an excellent activity that really got the children excited yesterday. We aquired some bones from a pet shop and after boiling them to get rid of the marrow we burued them in the sand. After adding archaeologist signs, brushes, magnifying glasses and cameras we told the children that we had made a discovery. I pretended that I rang the museum who said they were very busy and didn't have any anyone to dig them out. The children were beside themselves with excitement. They took great care removing them from the sand pit outside ands even chose to label them and write up an Archaeology report (I said i would need to s…

Minibeast Assembly
by Guest- 4 replies

Hi It is my class assembly in two weeks time. I am planning on doing it on Minibeasts. We have been learning lovely songs about Minibeasts so this ties in well. I was just about to sit down and write out the children's lines when I thought i'd ask you lovely people. Has anyone got a simple script that I could look at? I just feel really tired tonight and I need to get it out asap. Any ideas for the assembly would be warmly welcomed! Thanks Vicki

Does anyone have, or know where I could get, a poster or something similar showing good listening? I have one saying good sitting, good looking etc, but I wanted one that was more specific ie - look at the person who is talking, take turns to talk etc I'm sure I've seen something somewhere, but I've had a look around and can't find anything. thanks for your help!

We are yet again looking at writing attainment and we need to raise standards. Children are not scoring high enough at the end of each key stage and we are thinking that we are going to have to be much more prescriptive in our delivery, even in FS. So rather than have something imposed upon me I am trying to determine what others do that is successful. Do you use a writing scheme to deliver against and thereby allocate certain skills to appropriate year groups? We are also looking at abandoning continuous cursive handwriting as I do not think it is automatic enough for the children. The Junior school to which we feed does not do this and we will be consulting with th…

Hi everyone. This is my first post although i have used many of your fab ideas already! I am in need of advice about next year. I am an NQT but will be finished NQT year in July and am most likely to be staying where i am in reception. I find out soon if i can stay or not but in the mean time have an application due in friday. Basically am i wasting my time applying? Would love the extra responsibilty etc but just not sure firstly am i allowed to apply just after NQT year and secondly wo…
