Hi, I'm a trainee teacher and am struggling with a boy in my phonics group. He's definitely working at the right level but struggles to concentrate, talks a lot and distracts the other children. He has a big physical presence and likes to lounge around, often in other children's personal space. He's a really nice boy but I feel like I'm constantly saying his name to get his attention! Any advice would be gratefully received!

That good old phrase "at an age-appropriate level" was used. I wondered what kind of things people expected from their children with regard to this? And if any of you have had the pleasure of different year groups I'd love to know how that expectation might change. I often feel that I have quite high expectations in this respect but wonder if …

Help please! We had an informal visitor in class yesterday who said that if she was conducting an ofsted inspection she would have failed us. The main issue seemed to be that the room felt a bit manic. I agree with her. This cohort are everywhere and into everything. According to the existing staff (this is my first year in EYFS) these are the worst class in a while for looking after things. There were some great activities taking place, but I don't think she saw past the mess and noise. There are 34 children in the class plus we had three children and associated adults visiting from our autism unit. How can introduce a calmer more productive environment?

Mud kitchens with reception class

Setting up mud kitchens seems to be very popular at the moment in early years and I can see why are they are so popular in nursery settings. I have searched forums here and I wondered are there any reception class teachers setting up mud kitchens? Thinking of having a go with my current class but want to make sure it's appropriate for age group. I'm sure some parents will be quizzing me bout this new venture! So I really need to feel fully informed about it's potential for learning. Any advice please- eager to learn!
