I've been off school since 2 weeks before Christmas - been quite poorly (but nothing like as poorly as poor Peggy) following completely crazy term and Ofsted inspection (which went really well - so relieved!) - now I'm gradually going back for a couple of half days a week but have really got my head out of school mode! That's the background!! The thing is, I've now completely forgotten the order in which to teach counting patterns - which comes first? My maths planning says the learning objective is 'counting in 1s, 2s, 5s or 10s' - we're there (ish, on the whole ) with counting in 1s - which do I teach next? Absolutely basic question, can't think for the life of me w…

Hi there, hope someone will have some advice for me or at least some reassurance! In my reception class I have a lot of children who can still not hear middle and final sounds in words. I have never had such a large portion of children getting to this stage in the year without being able to do this. Usually it is just a few children who are often very immature. I have been teaching the letters and sounds as I did last year, with phonics everyday and often a lot of sound talk dripped through the day. I feel I really have done absolutely loads of sounding out! is there anything else I can do, or is it just a case of carrying on and plugging away until it clicks with th…

I've searched for planning and have found lots of good proformas, but what I really need to know is which ones have been "passed" by Ofsted. I was using a proforma given to me by the LA which was not well recieved by the powers that be and now I'm really stuck. Can anyone help? Oh I work in a reception class. Thanks

Just had a text from a friend who has made 15 packets of jelly up to use as a crocodile swamp next week and they haven't set!! As they are needed for tomorrow, I wondered if anyone else had had this happen and if it is a case of bin them and start again or can they be rescued?

I've just read this month's copy of EYE and read the article about the EYFS and teachers underestimating the children in reception and year 1 and not becoming more formal early enough. I was really surprised to read the article in EYE but really intrigued to know what everyone else thinks, as its such a topic for debate, and I often find myself defending early years against the KS2 leading of primary schools. Obviously we must have high standards and an environment that caters for individual larning needs - if children are ready for the kind of 'extending' discussed in the article we offer it... Has anyone else read it? What did you think?

Hi, I'm in Year 1 and have a child who started a little while before Xmas. He is about early nursery level with v poor motor skills/concentration skills. I would like to get together different fine motor activities for him but am at a loss what I could give him that would not need an adult with him. Any ideas much appreciated. Stilllearning
