Junk Modelling/workshop

Hi and Happy New year everybody! I teach reception and would like to set up a modelling/workshop area. I am not sure how best to go about this in terms of organisation. i want the children to be able to learn joining techniques etc and so am not sure whether to give them a specific task or whether to let them choose what they want to make and have an adult in the modelling area to support as necessary. At the moment I have a 'making' table where children have access to paper, scissors, glue / collage materials, string, masking tape, pens, crayons etc Oh and parents have sent in lots of packaging etc.. Your valuable tips and ideas would be greatly appreciated! thanks.

Hi all, I am being observed by my head teacher in a few weeks and the focus is 'reading'. Just wondered whether anyone had any brilliant ideas? I am a little concerned about how to link all areas to 'reading' including both adult-led and child-initiated learning??? I am a Foundation/Reception teacher?? Any ideas for activities would be greatly appreciated!!! Many thanks Tink

Hello, Happy New Year folks. Last year we were visited by the lovely ofsted. The school came out as excellent, the FS unit good. The only area that they said we could improve was 'handwriting'. Honestly there is nothing wrong with our handwriting but now our Lit coodinator has got a bee in her bonnet and a mission to improve it! I teach in F1, we teach handwriting when we write with the chidlren and we tie it into our phonics. I also do a weekly gross motor skills session, linked to handwriting following the penpals scheme (similar to write dance). Should I be doing a pen to paper/sand/cornflour medium type hanswriting activity each week? F2 move the children forw…

Chapter Books!

Hi, I was wondering if anybody has any suggestions of a 'chapter book' suitable for reception? Basically a book to read over a number of days/couple of weeks at the end of the day! Do people think this is suitable for Reception children at this stage? On my fianl PGCE/SCITT placement last year in a class with a similar mix of children I saw this work well in the summer term, with it really catching their imaginations as the book had very few pictures and they were black and white pencil drawings. One of my concerns is supporting EAL in my class if I used a book without pictures. Thank you! Nic

Hello, I am sitting here putting together some story sacks and have just got to elmer and the wind and realised that the resources that i downloaded off sparklebox are not elmer and the wind, just Elmer. Does anyone have or know where i can get some pictures from Elmer and the wind. I just need the characters to laminate and make into puppets. Thanks

Hi Looking for advice please! I am in a Reception class and we offer between 30 and 40 minutes of outdoor play a day. This is timetabled and not free flow due to physical restrictions! Does anybody know if we have to do dance in the spring as a timetabled slot? This would be a lot of time in the day. Thinking might do every second week in the hall. Any thoughts gratefully appreciated. Are many people offering timetabled outdoor slots or are people managing free flow? Thanks

Reception, Year 1 And Year 2
by Guest- 9 replies

Hi, first let me apologise incase this is covered elsewhere on the forum - but does anyone teach mixed reception, year 1 and year 2? My school are thinking of combining these classes next year, to make a unit (we don't have enough classrooms for three separate classes, and there will be too many children for our current set up of a straight reception class and a mixed year 1 and 2 class) I was just wondering whether anyone had an advise on how this works and how they plan for the three ages, as well as any problems. I know I'm kean - as it isn't an issue til sept 09, but my school want to get things thought over before the onset of christams. Thanks Emily
