Gun Play In Reception
by Guest- 3 replies

I wanted to find out what people's opinions are on the children, mainly boys, who like to make guns and use them in their play in Reception. I have a number of boys who are showing a lot of creativity in using different construction - sticklebricks, Knex, and even junk modelling to make guns and play together. What do you think ? Should this be stopped. I have encouraged them to use their imagination as the guns can not have bullets, e.g turns girls into frogs etc. It is a difficult question as it shows high levels of creativity and gets boys involved in roleplay, esp in the outdoor area.

Learning Objectives

In our Reception classes we currrently use Walt and Wilf with the children to talk about what we are learning about - however our head wants to change this to Leaning Objective - so that every one uses this across the school - A bit difficult for Reception to grasp I think so wondered what people used - also wanted was the use of the word 'outcome ' - even harder I thought but now that's changed to 'if I am successful I can .....' would be interested to know what people do for Reception - thanks

Hi I am looking for some good books to read relating to a few areas 1. Gender differences between types of play. 2. Speaking and listening development and language acquisition. 3. Different stages of child development. I have realised that although I know a fair bit about child development It wouldn't do me any harm to swat up a bit more, especially since it also interests me a great deal. However I am not a big fan of text book style books and often find myself switching off if it is too wordy! Can anyone reccommend any good, non boring books?

Teacher Led Pe In Nursery
by Guest- 16 replies

Hi, I work in a nursery attached to a primary school. The nursery offers a 2 and a half hour session per child to be taken in the morning or afternoon. The PE co-ordinator in the reception class has recently been on a course and has informed me that I should teach formal PE lessons for 30 minutes each day. I feel that this is totally inappropriate when the children have continuous provision of indoor and outdooor learning and there would also be an imbalance between teacher led and child initiated activities. Also within this 2 and half hour session I also have to prepare toast and snacks for the children and there would be insufficient time to do everything else I have…

Neg Funding

Currently all Local Authorites are undergoing a review of the Nursery Grant funding arrangements, this will affect how much the PVI sector are paid per hour to deliver funded nursery education. I presume that different authorities have arrived a different rates, my local authority have suggested a rate of £2.23 per hour( we currently recieve £.3.60) for Private and Voluntary settings but over £6.00 per hour for maintained nurseries. Has anyone else heard anything yet? Julie

Hi Just wanted to get a consensus of opinion from you all. Are people still refering to the statements before the early learning goals as "stepping stones" or have you found a different name for them. There seems to be some confusion amongst practitioners I have spoken to. I would be very grateful if people would let me know. Thanks

Hi all, We have just changed our topics in school and have used the Hamilton Trust website as a little inspiration! Next term's topic is 'Shoes' (odd I know!!) incorporting stories such as Cinderella, Elves and the shoe maker etc. Just wondered whether anyone had any ideas for a role play area we could have in the classroom linked to the topic shoes?
