Big Writing
by Guest- 7 replies

Hi guys, I'm in need of some TLC and some advice about big writing please!! Just got home after a pretty negative staff meeting about big writing and feel like some of the criticism may have been aimed at the Foundation Stage. Any ideas, advice, thoughts about big writing would be greatly appreciated. Obviously the amount of 'writing' Reception aged children do is limited, or is my perception wrong? In the past, as part of big writing I have got my class to make class books of our own version of popular stories, e.g. Over in the Grasslands, Bear on a Bike etc and written our own adventurous bear hunt story and we have written a collective poem about the sea. …

Teaching Reading Skills?
by Guest- 8 replies

I have been a lurker on here for a while but I am in need of some guidance if anyone is able to help I would be very grateful. I having been assisting a Y3 with their reading. My problem is the child is struggling with the high frequency words taught in reception such as look, here, where etc. I am looking for some FUN resource to use instead of the same old books that they have been using for years. I was thinking maybe a lotto/matching game? Or any ideas of how I can engage them in the high frequency words. Thanks in advance

Just had to come on here and moan about the terrible ICT disaster that has happened today! The school secretary took my laptop insisting she needed it to make my Smartboard work (I told her my smartboard was working fine, but she insisted and we both assumed that she knew what she was talking about). While she and the ICT support technician woman had my computer they seem to have lost all the work I did over the summer holidays - everything I did to update my continuous provision planning, all the work I did adapting everything to EYFS and bringing in new systems to really improve FS provision this year - ALL GONE!!!! I can't believe it! At first I thought I'd just l…

Hi We have had a much higher than expected in take of children for our Reception class this year just wondered if others are in the same situation and how it has affected your ratio of adult to child. We have one teacher and one full time LSA but it appears we are going to have over 30 children in the end. Just wondered what is happening in other schools?

School only started on the 8th and the reception children don't start full days til Mon! Anyway I'll keep you posted on what they say about the EYFS. Wake Up Shake Up

I have moved from an open plan school to a closed classroom and it is great!! We can play musical instruments and march around the room, we can sing and dance and experience so much more. I want to do Wake Up and Shake Up with my reception children in the morning, I have a copy of a DVD with the songs and actions but it is not a very good copy. Is there a website/place where I can buy such things for a session. I have got some sticky kids stuff which may be a possibility.

Hello everyone! I am currently working as FS leader in a school with a nursery and a Reception Class. The nursery is in a separate building with a lovely Welcome area for parents which makes it easier to talk to them about their children's learning and sharing nursery profiles with them as an ongoing process. The Reception class find this more difficult as they do not get the chance to chat to parents in the same way as I can in Nursery. I was wondering how other Reception classes include parental input in building on children's FS Profiles. Any ideas?
