Have just been rereading through the EYFS and there are a few mentions of getting adult led and child led balance. It made me wonder whether this should be half and half, or how much really. at the moment we have about 2 hours straight in the morning where it is free flow and me and my TA do adult focus with all children. This works out though that the children have about an hour and a half CI and 30mins in an adult focus groups. Is this similar to what other people are doing or, do you do more adult focus groups? I have a mixed YR/Y1 class of 30 children.

Hi all I was wondering what your opinion is on writing within early years. I currently work with a teacher who starts the chidlren off tracing, then they move onto writing underneath, then copying off of a piece of paper and then when ready they become independent writers. This method is only used during focussed writing tasks, during self initiated writing times then the children are independent. Those that aren't ready generally don't choose to write. However I don't entirely agree. She says that we have to show them how to write before they can learn to do it which i agree with but I think i'm more a fan of energent writing. Even when I sit and write with the ch…

I am starting at a new school next week and have always been given my timetable. Today I found out I need to put my own together incorporating the slots for the hall/ICT etc. Does anyone have one they would be willing to share with me to get me started? Thanks in advance.

I am back at work today but with some spectacular news! My head has informed me that there is a big pot of money with EYFS's name on it but it has to be used for outdoor improvements and ICt only. Had anyone got any fab ICT resources that they could reccomend? OR any ideas to improve our outdoors? At the moment we have a few climbing frames and a grassy bank but the rest of the playground is free. We don't have patio door at the moment so that is going to be top on my list.

Just a reminder to everyone, especially all our new members, that there are lots of Resources and Articles which can be accessed by clicking on the links on the left hand side of the page. There is some support topic planning, which would give ideas for PLOD's, there are articles on working towards EYPS, or motivational planning, which is of course very relevant to planning from September. Plus lots more. Do take the time to look around as there are some really interesting contributions, and a few light hearted and amusing ones as well.

Grouping The Children In Reception
by Guest- 4 replies

I am due to start in a new school next week in Reception, having previously spent last year in Y3 and four years prior to that in Reception. My previous school had a nursery attached so I got a pretty good idea at what level the children were at and I would group them before they started with me in September. I like to group them for ease of moving around the classroom and routines. I always make self registration cards with a picture of the group they are in and their name underneath. This is so they get use to seeing their names and they learn which group they are in. Now I want to start the self registration from day one so they get into ther routine but th…

We usually buy our caterpillars from insect lore. Grow them in the small plastic containers and they feed on what the children call "mushy pea food". At school yesterday i was looking at the veg garden at the sprouts, they were coverd in hundreds of eggs and hundreds of tiny caterpillars. ( same size as caterpillars through the post) Sily Question. Can i put some of these in our butterfly garden with the leaves? and miss out the small tub growing bit. Has anybody ever done this. I cant wait for the children to find these on Wednesday, the leaves look so funny, full of holes. There has been a very hungry caterpillar at school! Im happy to send any through the post if you…
