Our head has generously got our governors to spend a large sum of money on developing a specifc outdoor area for our two Reception classes. He is hoping to turn a gravel area outside a classroom into an open outdoor access area for outdoor learning. We were just wondering about what flooring would be best - he had a quote for soft play ( I think that is what its called) - cost about £27000 but apparently you can't paint on this - I must admit I thought he would just have tarmac put down with an additional grassy area. Quotes are still being got and just wondered what other people had done - don't want to make the wrong decision with all that money being spent. He also…

Just going over the ratios again and trying to clarify that in a 2 form entry reception class with a class teacher and L3 qualified FS practitioner in each room that when one teacher is on PPA a L3 qualified HLTA can cover the PPA with a L3 qualified FS practitioner with her...effectively 3x L3 and 1 teacher between two reception classes (60 children)? Am I right or am I just being hopeful??!

Pshe Observation

Hi, our Head is observing every class being taught PSHE next week, including Reception. I don't normally tend to do stand alone PSHE 'lessons' normally, but rather include PSHE within everything else that we do. I'm completely lacking inspiration for a single PSHE lesson suitable for Reception that will last 45 minutes! Plus I have a terrible headache and can't think straight at the moment! I'm not a big fan of the SEAL resources for Reception, and can't really think where to start. Please someone help me! Thanks

Can anyone recommend a play house for our outdoor area? We are in the process of developing our outdoor area and have been given a substantial sum of money to do it, although there will be a fair amount of groundwork to do which will eat into the figure. However I don't want to spend all the budget on a house as I would also like to buy resources for the whole area too (including community playthings blocks!) I would prefer to keep it under £1000. Our unit consists of two reception class that will have 60 children by the end of the year so the structure needs to be solid, not too twee (headteacher) and openended (me - although I know the children will change …

Tables And Chairs

This might be a really daft question, but do you have enough tables and chairs for all the children in your class to be sitting down at once? I am inheriting a class where this is the case, but they are very short of floor space. I visited my old school today, and the teacher there was saying that they have cleared out many of the tables and chairs for this reason. My new class (in September) will be YR, Y1 and Y2, so there will need to be a bit of "formality" for the Y2s at appropriate times, I expect, but I'm wondering how much I could get away with? I might be wrong, but I can't imagine there being a time when all the children are sitting down at tables at the same tim…

I try to write comments during the sessions and then sometimes i will set up something if i feel it needs assessing. I find it easy to say what they don't know but sometimes i find it difficult to write down achievements. Any ideas on continued assessment, thanks again ger

Hi! Thought I might ask for your advice on something that has been baffling me for a couple of days now... I am going for a senior position at school which will include teaching in Reception, which I am really rather excited about! I spent my first year in KS1, in Year 1 last year which I loved and I moved schools last year and am teaching Year 2 at the moment. So although I am familiar with Infants, I need to prep up on the littley ones! As part of the interview process I need to teach a 20 minute session in Reception and so was wondering if anyone had any ideas about what to do, can be any subject at all. It's like being in a sweet shop, far too much choice! …

Hi everyone, I was planning to put compost out for the children so they can pretend to plant with it. But I have heard that it may not be safe to let children play with it and that we might not be allowed? Anyone know if this is true?
