Hi everyone, I read somewhere that the British government or one of its agencies is reconsidering the age of children entering Year 1... more specifically, those who become 5 just during the summer holiday (July-Aug.). I need to find this information the soonest possible. Do you have any idea where this was said? I have a case of a pair of twins. One of them 'might' be prepared to go to Y1, but her sister is definitively not developmentally ready for this transition. The father doesn't want them to be separated and wants this 2nd one to go to Y1. She will not be able to manage the work of Y1; she hardly can handle ours . They never become 5 during Receptio…

Hi Next term our topic is based around the theme of organising a wedding. We did this a couple of years ago and it was brilliant we booked our local church and vicar, had real wedding cars, cake, bridesmaid outs etc. Anyway as part of the project we have pretend relatives (the children) coming from different countries around the world. I'm just planning for that now and wondered if anyone knew of any good websites designed for early years, that takes a look at different countries. We are taking a brief look at Australia, France, Russia, Mexico and England. Anyone know of any child friendly sites? Thanks in advance! Vicki

Hi As a school, this finacial year there is going to substantial investment in to the maths resources accross the primary school. The maths coordinator has asked me to think about what sort of thing I would like to have in the foundation stage. In the main school I think they will probably end up with a scheme and I not sure this is particularly appropriate for the foundation stage. I have had some experience of numicon which I quite liked... I was wondering what main resources others use? Do you have a scheme? If so how do you rate it? Have you used numicon? what do you think of it? Would really welcome your feedback. Thanking you in advance Elfy x

Hi, not sure where to post this so if its in the wrong place mods do move it I'm an unqualified teacher working in a school, I am a qualified nursery nurse and also have a degree. I am hoping to start a QTS only route from September. I'm looking to join a union but having had a look at the ones avaibale I am unsure of which would be the best to join- pann would be the obvious option but I don't want to join up then have to join another one when doing QTS. I just don't know what catergory I would come under? Can anyone advise me on what/how to do this?

I've just read an uplifting piece in a recent Nursery World magazine, about a primary school in the West Midlands who have used the principles of the FS, i.e. a child-focussed ethos, learning through play etc , to plan activities for their Year 1s. The head talked about how stressed the children are with the pressure of SATs in year 2, and about how she feels assessment should be done less formally. Do you think that Key Stage 1 SATs are not long for this world?! Let's hope so

Marking Work

Just interested to know how people mark work in Reception. I have a literacy book for example, and sometimes the children might be asked to write a shopping list in their books for a change (most of the time, writing etc. takes place in the role-play and of the children's own accord). When a child has finished their piece of work, I date it, write a comment to say whether they could do the work independently or needed help, plus a comment to say what they could do or found difficult, e.g. Could hear the sounds within words but found it hard to form some of the letters properly - t and s. Then at the top or bottom of page I mark it with CLL writing point 5, f…

My school has a fairly strict uniform policy - (shirts, ties, skirts etc). The girls can wear trousers, but parents tend to opt for skirts. We're in a very exposed area - fields all round and plenty of icy winds! What do you do in terms of outdoor activities if you have a similar uniform? Do you ask parents to provide tracky bottoms or similar in the way you would a PE kit or do you just put up with it to keep the free movement between outdoors/indoors as smooth as possible? I'd love to keep the reception year "uniform free" if I could, but don't think I'd get away with it

Writing Inspiration Needed
by Guest- 8 replies

I have just got back from a fantastic farm visit with my reception class. They were so well behaved and I didn't loss any- which is a bonus! Tomorrow I'm going to look back at the photos we took today and do lots of talking about the visit. I want the children to have a go at writing some captions to go with the photos for our display. Trouble is I am exhausted and am in need of some inspiration of interesting ways to do it- previously we have writen captions on pieces of paper with farm animal borders- not the most exciting of writing tasks! Any ideas would be great! Thank you. xx Oophs- just realised where I posted this- I have copied it into a more appropr…

what do people think about write dance? Our reception teacher used to use it but sold her stuff on as she didn't think it was that good. I'm in Nursery and would be interested in what others think about it. Thanks.
