Help needed please! I am a reception class teacher in a school where the management likes to see structure and formal teaching. We were ofsteded a few weeks ago and I was told that the class was too formal with not enough opportunity for independent learning (which I agree with!). However discussion with the head resulted in his insistance that formal teaching remains in place because of the need to raise standards and I must conform with school planning structures etc. Feel very frustrated and don't know what to do. Any ideas?

Hi all, i have a 5 year old girl in my reception class - she can read and write all high frequency words for reception - she reads them in stories and uses them in her writing. She can fluently read simple stores and is able to sound out trickier words. She is writing recounts and stories using finger spaces and is beginning to use full stops. In numeracy she can compare numbers, recognise numbers to 100 and can complete addition and subtraction sums such as 22+22. She also writes her own sums. Hi, this is my first time to start a post, so I hope I have got it all in the right place. I was just wondering, now that the new Letters and Sound Document has come in and jumbled eveything up how does the ELS assessments fit? Are they bringing out a new ELS and if so were can I get hold of a copy? I was just wondering because my TA (who is very experienced in ELS) asked me about assessing the year 1's ready to start after Christmas. When we looked at the assessments we don't cover some of the words till phase 5 now. Sorry to bother, JO

Hi everyone, I am still looking for inspiration!! I need to compile something for my head's retirement 'Special memories' book. I really want to come up with something fantastic and original, it can be a poem, photo, a memory etc. She is a truely inspirational person who is the heart of our school and will be sorely missed. I wondered if anyone has done something similar. I have been trawling web sites for an appropriate poem, thought I could start there. It can be funny, she has a great sense fun and humour. We did an earlier post on cursive handwriting. My son's school has a policy of cursive writing from reception. He finds it hard to do as we has problems with his gross and fine motor skills. He has been having OT and we have been working at home with him on "handwriting without tears". His handwriting has improved and he has enjoyed printing. We spoke to his headmistress and asked if she could support this and even got a letter from the OT on the matter. She said that the school policy is for cursive and that they would do "write from the start" with him at school and move onto cursive. They could not support his printing.
