We have a child in our reception Class who is causing us some concern. He is a bright little chap, academically able and eager to please. but he does sometimes become aggressive. In the nursery he would hit other children and this was usually dealt with by time out and also by ensuring that when he was kind and playing well with his friends he was praised. Unfortunately since moving to Reception he has been finding it very difficult to keep his temper under control. He has started biting (Twice so far). He is generally a lovely little boy and is now becoming quite stressed, he usually hits out when someone is stopping him doing something or when they are not doing wh…

Help needed please! A few weeks ago a new child started my reception class. Due to difficult family circumstances, he has not had much contact with other children and seems to lack basic skills of communication (he does speak English at home.) He doen't seem to want to play with other children - either he doesn't want to or doesn't know how. I have spoken to the nursery which he attended for some months and they have said similar things. Now he is becoming a little agressive with other chilren and I'm starting to get comlaints from parents that their children are scared of him. I have tried circle time. I've tried modelling 'playing' different games in the playground, …

'but I Don't Like Brown Miss...'
by Guest- 6 replies

Help! Last week one of the children in my reception class refused to work with another child because 'I don't like brown'. The second child is of dual heritage (i think that's the politically correct term at the moment!). I spent a long time talking to the first child about skin tones and how everyone had a slightly different skin tone etc etc. Both children ended up working together for part of the afternoon. Unfortunately our school is in a predominatly white area with only 5 dual hertiage children out of a total on 200. I spoke to the child's parents straight after school and they said the child had come out with remarks like this before. As a school we are very…

HI THERE, I HAVE AN INTERVIEW COMING UP, THEY WANT ME TO TEACH A LESSON - ANY YEAR GROUP, ANY SUBJECT, ANY OBJECTIVE THEN DO A PRESENTATION THEN AN INTERVIEW THE LESSON WILL BE 30 MINS - TOO LONG FOR A CARPET SESSION, NOT LONG ENOUGH FOR GROUP WORK . . . . SO IT HAS TO HAVE THE WOW FACTOR. I CURRENTLY TEACH FS 2, THE INTERVIEW IS FOR A POOL SO COULD RESULT IN A JOB IN ANY YEAR GROUP. HAVE BEEN THINKING I COULD EITHER; 1. DRESS UP AS A CHARACTER (POSS TEACHING Y1?) 2. TAKE A BIG BOX OF AUTUMN LEAVES IN AND HIDE THINGS INSIDE 3. DO SOMETHING ON FANTASY, USE A MAGIC KEY - WHERE DOES IT LEAD ETC. IN GROUPS CHILDREN COULD BRAINSTORM WHAT THEY WOULD SEE, HEAR, F…

Whistle Obsession
by Guest- 9 replies

Hi all I have a boy in my class who had an interest in trains. Each time he role played trains he wanted to be the guard with the hat, flag and whistle - he loved blowing the whistle. Now however his interest has become an obsession. At playtime a couple of teachers have let him blow their whistle which i think was wrong as 1. the germs!!!! and 2. every child will be wanting to blow the whistle. He now will not play at playtime and instead waits by the teacher wanting to hold and blow the whistle - he even tries to take it out of their pockets. In class he is constantly looking around the classroom for my whistle. His mum has said that at home he is waking up in the mid…

Hello all, Loving this forum, completely addicted! I need some inspiration. My Head is retiring at the end of this term. She is truely an amazing head and person. She is the heart of our school and we want to give her a good send off. Each class have been asked to perform in any way (singing, poetry, drama etc) using a theme close to our headteacher's heart. I have chosen 'Friendship'. I really want the children to enjoy the experience and for my head to take away with her a special memory. Any suggestions would be much appreciated. Thanks Munch
