Homework In Reception
by Guest- 17 replies

Can you believe I've already had some parents asking where is their child's homework - some of the kids have only been in 3 days so far I'm in Reception class. Do you give homeowrk on a regular basis? I'm not starting children on a reading book until we've done 4 weeks phonics teaching and only then it will be the children who are ready. I'm starting my phonics teaching (phase two) next week - would you send home the letters of the week (or some words to practice belending and segmenting?) I do feel it's a bit too early for the majority of the children however I am aware that some of my children (the ones with older brothers and sisters) are requesting homework al…

Outdoor Area
by Guest- 19 replies

Does anyone have a good plan that I could look at for their outdoor area? I have been given a blank canvas if you like, as the previous reception teacher was given a new tarmaced area last Sept and did absolutely nothing with it. In fact she kept the door to the area closed!! It is not huge-but big enough for 10 children which is all I will have. There is a covered porch thing as soon as you walk out then a ramp down to a square of playground with railings around it. As I said it is new and unused-so nothing to go with. There is a gate one side on to main playground and a gate the other side on to a secure grass area. Any plans or ideas I could share will be v…

Hi all, just feel i need to have a moan about how many things we're asked to do in reception!! Last year our school brought the RML scheme to teach phonics, reading, writing etc it was brought to replace jolly phonics which i know isnt perfect, we started using the new scheme at easter after having minimal training (even tho it says in the manual all staff should be trained to deliver it including TA's but there is no money for cover for us to go!) after using the scheme i can see the benefits as its the best bits of a couple of schemes including bits from jolly phonics and even letterland. Our literacy co-ordinator has now brought us the Letters and Sounds document whi…

Structure Of Day In Reception/fsu.
by Guest- 1 reply

Hi all, Was wondering if there is any guidance easily accessible about how a day should be structured in reception, with regard to the new framework. We have been asked to do a discrete Literacy and Numeracy lesson each day, and teach Letters and Sounds separately. We need ideas on how to make this work Hope there is some advice out there, as we are finding it difficult. Annie1979

Treating Large Tractor Tyres?
by Guest- 3 replies
- 1.6k views
Hi We have very kindly been donated several large tractor tyres for use in our outdoor area. We would love to have sand, pebbles, twigs, grass etc etc in different tyres. Our county grounds manager mentioned today that the tyres would need to be 'treated' first as the Carbon that they let off is potentially cancer causing. He was unsure of what they needed to be 'treated' with. Does anyone have any ideas? Many thanks

Plan-do-review

Having had the plan do review book for a couple of months I have finally got round to reading it and I'm really liking the idea of it and some of the ideas in the book are wonderful. Iwondered if anyone out there is using this already in a nursery/reception class (i'm in a reception class) and how is it working? Do you have a time allocated to this every day or is it just certain days? Also was wondering how best to introduce this to my TA - the book is pretty hard going and very long and I don't just want to photocopy large sections as it doesn't seem fair to expect her to read it all in the next week. If you were being asked to take on a new approach such as this …

Hi we are getting inspected by our local authority next week and I have been told that as i am the only teacher in our FSU that i will be getting interviewed for approx 30 mins!! so nervous as we only started our FSU this sept. The head mentioned I should have an action plan of what we hope to develop. I know I would like to put outdoor provision on it as it desperately needs developing but im not sure if there is anything else i should include? We have begun planning through children's interests after reading motivational planning article and it is going well. Has anyone had an inspection like this before? If so what type of things will they ask? Any help appreciat…
