Hi there, Hope that you are all having a good break this week! As per usual for a teacher, working in the holidays. Are we the only professionals who do this?? Anyway, sidetracked a bit there. I'm after some advice. What is your view on who goes to the moderation meetings within your school/setting? If only one person is permitted to attend, who should it be or do you take it in turns? Thanks :-) Jelli

Visits to school

We have a large 75 pupil intake each September. Currently each child is offered 5 x 1 hr 45mins sessions run by TAs. This means at least 2 often 3 of our TAs are out of class running the sessions for 2 days a week for 5 weeks. This leaves very little support in Reception in these day. A 6 th visit happens after all these visits the children then get another session where they meet their teacher. ( There are 3 classes.) During the 5 visits by the children the teachers get the chance to pop into these sessions but don't really get chance to get to know the children. The sessions are run in the Infant hall so the children don't really get to know the environment. I would…

directing children in provision
by Guest- 4 replies

I would welcome advice on a few queries about continuous provision... Should children in a reception class be directed to a specific area and challenge? Is it a big issue if a few children ignore the beautiful enhancement you have put in and get out their favourite construction toy? If a quiet child is watching -taking things in - but not fully engaging, should they always be directed? How long would you expect a child to concentrate at an activity, and at what point would they be considered "flitting"? My colleague and I don't see eye to eye on these matters and I wondered what other people thought?

Hi all I'm relatively new to the site and have so many eyfs questions but I'm starting with something that really bothers me... I'm new to my school and am still trying to figure out what is expected from me/my children evidence wise, but I fear that my worries have lead me down a path that's too formal. I worry I do too much adult led work and not enough playing/interacting - something I'm working on at the moment to improve! I just wondered if anyone else records 'work' from adult led sessions (small group or 1:1) in books or has a folder for work produced or if it's not really necessary, most of my adult led activities are practical play based tasks or purposef…

Transition into large school
by Guest- 0 replies

We have a 75 intake each year from 20+ Pre-schools and nurseries. We are looking to revamp our transition process and I was wondering how others who have a large intake, manage transition into school. How many visits do the children get? How many children at once? How long is each session? Do you decide classes as soon as you get intake names or after visits to schools or after visits to feeder Pre-schools/nurseries? Thanks for your help in advance.

Jack And The Beanstalk

Hi, This week, we are looking at the book 'Jack and the Beanstalk'. Am looking for some inspiration on ideas that have worked well with this topic, particularly activities that the children can do independently. Have got an 'open house' morning on Tues and need to show water tray, sand, construction, etc all being used effectively and hopefully linking in with the story. Any ideas would be greatly appreciated. Tinyone

Hi Everyone! My current topic is around the world on magic carpet - we have so far used the 'magic carpet' to explore our local environment and we have recently visited China in readiness for the new year and now the children have elected to travel to Australia - which is quite exciting - however I am stuck for a role play idea?? Any help would be greatly appreciated  Bambam x

Hi, Just wondering whether anyone else changes their behaviour when they are being observed or an 'important' person comes into their setting? I can be quite happily interacting with an individual or group of children, but seem to turn into a deranged meerkat when other people come in - whether it is to observe me formally or coming in for another reason. I seem to avoid sitting down and constantly scan the room! <_< Just as a side thought - during CI time do you have an idea of how many children you would like to interact with or just go with the flow, accepting that each day will be different and with 2 staff we just have to do the best we can? resources to encourage writing

Hi there I am keener than ever this year to encourage my year R pupils to write whilst 'on the go'. I have done lots of research and like the idea of providing children with little 'writing bags' to tie round their waists whilst they play outside. Does anyone know where I can quickly and easily get hold of a good variety of pencils and notebooks etc that would appeal to boys as well as girls such as Disney, Ben Ten? Is it best to go on line or to supermarkets. I have also seen giant themed pencils -I thought these were great, but where do they come from? All suggestions welcome Thank you
