This was announced yesterday by Beverley Hughes and it appears to be mandatory from September 2008 1) Does anyone have any links to useful resources which relate to it please? 2) To what extent will it apply to private nursery schools with no state funding ie not registered for the NEG or anything else? Hi all, hope your enjoying your weekend!! In my class, and through out the school really, we have a problem motivating boys and the attainement is falling much lower than the schools. I teach reception and have noticed over the last week some of the boys are beginning to switch off. The girls are really eager to learn and love having a go where as the boys are loosing interest, especially during whole class literacy inputs. I have tried to make them as interactive as possible but there is still a group of boys who loll around on the carpet with 'are we nearly finished' I need to do something quick before i lose them completely. Has anyone tried this new scheme that's out? I always find the children are brilliant are remembering all of their sounds because of jolly phonics but some of the less able children struggle with recognising all their numbers. I have tried to make actions/songs to go woth each number but wondered if there was a scheme like jolly phonics for numeracy instead? Saw Nippy numbers on a website and wondered if it was any good?!

Attention/concentration Games
by Guest- 5 replies

Hiya I have a small group of children in my reception class who generally find it very very very hard to concentrate/listen/pay attention. It is driving me and my TA round the bend! Most, but not all are either EAL/SEN therefore understanding is often a problem. Does anyone have any good ideas for games/activities we can play to help them develop these skills - at the moment they are either completely unresponsive, sitting blankly or completely disrupting everyone else in the class during carpet times. Its not even any better when they are in a small group! I have been using the Foundations of literacy book, little book of listening, but I find sometimes the…

Subtraction

OK I need your help guys. My class are generally very good with their number skills and only 2 or 3 can't count to 10. We really need to focus on addition and subtraction in their calculating skills. They get addition fairly well and can work out one more and add together. The dilemma is subtraction, they can take one away, they can find one less when an adult asks them and even take away within 10, some of them. The trouble is they aren't using the vocabulary, they are having difficulties grasping language such as '5 take away 1 leaves 4.' and 'If I take away 1 I have 1 left'. As a school we have a big focus on speaking and listening as their skills are quite poor t…

The theme is re-cycled colour (I emptied out my airing cupboard in the half term and was getting rid of the childrens old quilt covers,red,blue,yellow...)Each class has a colour and can go down the shades etc The book by Belair re-cycling art has the example I showed staff to get them fired up.Letters…

Hello all, Just wondered how much direction you get from your managers? I seem to be left to my own devises and am struggling a bit without any help. My FS Co-ord is also the Deputy Head and has no time to give me. I am on my own in the FS so no other teacher to discuss planning, timetabling or assessment with and am getting a bit fed up. I am also fairly new to teaching and so have only a limited amount of experience to draw on. I would like to have regularly meetings with the FS Co-ord to go over progression, any areas for improvement and at least get some feedback from time to time but this never happens despite many requests. Any discussions are quick chats …

Hi there, I have an interview next week for a Thurs & Friday temp job share position until end of year coming up in a Yr 1 class close to home. I am cutting my hours down after Easter and doing Monday - weds only in my current position as a mixed Rec/yr1 teacher at a school an hour away. This job seems perfect and will hopefully make my life a lot easier and perhaps open doors for Sept in this school or another local one. Really hopeful that will be successful but its a tough one and could just use a few wise words please or advice/ideas. I have been asked to take a Year2 class PSHE lesson for 45minutes first before my formal interview. (I haven't taught …

Foundation Moderation Rant

here I go again Another LEA moderation meeting 4pm-6pm, finished at 5.20 because they had nothing more to say. We were looking at 9's.......the advisers were insistent that 80% of our observations and assessments were to come from continous play. My Catch 22 how can children be a 9 in writing if they are not 'taught'spelling, handwriting ,punctuation, different forms of writing etc etc, Tinkerbellx
