Hi, we use jolly phonics and Sounds Write for our phonics teaching, and focus on teaching segmenting, blending and wordbuilding skills once the children have learnt the first six sounds that are taught. The children that I teach for phonics are really good at wordbuilding, but I would like to play a wider variety of games during whole class wordbuilding sessions At the moment, the chil dren love 'In the Dustbin' which is a variation on hangman, but personally I'm getting sick of it!!!! Does anyone else have any other word building games which are good for whole class sessions Looking forward to your ideas Thanks BB

Hiya I hope someone might be able to help me! Is there any way to get playdough out of the carpet? My class had new carpets laid in september, with a far too small lino area Therefore everytime I have the playdough out it enivitably falls on the floor, gets stepped on and goes all over the carpet. Anyone have any ideas, or even how I can begin to minimise future occurances would be grateful as have the cleaners telling me off constantly! Amanda

by Guest- 7 replies

Hi. I have to do a reading workshop for parents in my school and of children who will be coming to our school. Their children are aged between 2-7. I need to make it simple but effective as many of our parents have poor reading skills themselves and/or are EAL. I've thought about using some of the chapters from the 'Foundations of Literacy' book as starting points, so I'll include: General introduction 1. Introduction 2. Learning to listen 3. Time to talk 4. Music, movement and memory 5. Story time! 6. Learning about print 7. Tuning into sound (phonics) 8. Summary: What can you do to help at home? (Bedtime story, Library etc) Does anyone have any more…

Hi Everyone, Could you give me some advice please? The teacher in the nursery i work at has asked me if i could ask you all what writing style is now taught in schools, the teacher has a parent who has asked her to teach a child to write her name, the child has emergent writing and is aware of the letter sounds of the alphabet. The child has started to write her name, but the teacher wants to know is cursive writing still taught in primary schools. She also would like to know, if you are teaching a child to write a capital 'A' would you do it as the computer does with a point at the top or with a round at the top, hope this makes sense, we had such a discussion about t…
