Flash Cards
by Guest- 4 replies

In our work at a private day nursery our pre-school team have been discussing the use of flash cards because at our last inspection the inspector said she didn't see any evidence of us using phonics. She evidenced that children could read their name but not necessary that they would know A for Adam etc. My question is two fold really for all you experts out there:- 1. Do you recommend (and can we actually use) Flash cards to help the children learn phonics. 2. Any suggestions for introducing Phonics to children, most of whom are 3 (we only have 1 four year old). Most of our children are only just 3 or 3 1/2. Appreciate any ideas or help and also if you h…

by Guest- 24 replies

Hi there- first of all I hope that you have all had lots of fun over the festive period and all the best for 2007 a happy new year! I have had time to relax and even enjoyed a break away to Devon with friends but now I am back and thinking about work again all my worries and problems seem to be flooding back. I am not sure where to really begin apart from the fact I have had a difficult time during my first two terms at my new small village school. I was appointed as the rec/yr1 class teacher and I have an even split of the two 15 children in each yr group. I am in need of a virtual hug for sure! I need some of you more experienced teachers/practitioners to t…

Phonics And Cll

Hi everyone, My Year 1 teacher has been on a course recently which said that in accordance with the rose review, etc we (from F2 upwards) should be doing a daily discrete phonics session. Think catma has posted this guidance too somewhere. Last term the majority of my CLL focused activities have been phonic based (daily) and have done lots of speaking and listening too (foundations of Lit). However having looked at my profile scores it is easy to see I need to do lots more text based work but how do you fit it all in? If i am doing daily phonic session how many times a week can I do some sort of book based activities? I know CLL is at the foundation of everything…

Don't know if any other Reception teachers experience this, but thought I would share my frustrations and let off steam. We are constantly planning activities that we feel are exciting and stimulating, but seem to frequently hear the refrain "but we cover that in Year 1" i e please don't do it in Reception. I can appreciate its frustrating if all the children are saying 'we've done that before', but its equally frustrating to plan exciting activities only to have them vetoed. Surely there are some things that its ok to cover again. We cover Christmas every year don't we!
